[.95] BETA 4 Initial Impressions
Disappointed . . .
Hey there. First of all I'd like to make it clear I've been with this series since the first beta of WoM. So I have high hopes for this game and have stuck through it all. It saddens me to say though that BETA 4 has been truly disappointing and I am really starting to lose hope in the series. I really would like it to succeed but that window for me is becoming smaller and smaller with each release. Let me outline some points:
PROS
- City building has been improved.
- Spell selection UI has improved.
- AI is a lot smarter.
- Equipment seems more balanced. (Although we still need more ranged weapons.)
- Graphics overall looks more polished.
- I like that damage spells can be resisted.
- Overall much better gameplay than BETA 3.
- I like the idea of Essence but I think you should be able to add at least one enchantment to a city without a base Essence point. Maybe allow you to add one more enchantment than you have Essence but charge a mana upkeep for that one extra one? Or else if you have a bad start city enchantments are all but useless.
- Loading of saved games is always a crapshoot. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it messes up quests. Sometimes map markers disappear. Fog of war gets messed up. I've even had the tech tree connection lines disappear.
- Things break most when loading between games. A fresh restart of the game and then a load usually fixes things. So something is not being cleared or set correctly.
- Multiple events firing at once still makes you jump all over the place. There really needs to be a "wait" process to the multi-threadedness of the UI. It's so chaotic at the beginning of every turn. Even after every unit action it tries to auto-select the next unit. Pop-ups for the game still come up when you quit to the main menu!
- UI elements being too small. I know you have to design for a minimum screen resolution but don't make us running in 1080P suffer too. Increase the width of the information panels based on the resolution so we don't have to click a next or expand arrow to see everything.
- A side effect of this is if you have multiple items in the build queue you can only drag and drop between the visible 5 or so items. So can never swap item number 1 with item number 7 because you have to click the previous or next arrow first and that would drop what you dragged.
- Tactical battles still slow to a crawl every so often. You have to auto resolve them to get through.
- Multi-turn spells seem to really mess up the flow of battle. Either they really slow things down, make UI elements like the action bar disappear, or they never finish. Noticed most with Titan's Breath.
- Balancing units, traits, and spells still needs a lot of work.
- Lots of glitches related to the strategic map. Pathfinding, moving to a specific square, animations being wrong, display of units, etc . . .
- We need a way to deny a quest without having it disappear. Accidently going on a master quest dragon statue when you are not ready and declining it well means you can no longer finish the master quest.
