Auto-build, governers or what you call them.

Hi there, I have played a high amount of similar games to Elemental, some people call them 4 x'es and whatnot.

And in most games I see some "auto-build" or governor feature, where the AI is choosing what production is used for, for the city placed under the rule of auto-build.
What I would like to see was some auto-building feature where I could change the things the AI would like to build, so I can set one of my cities to automatically build troops for example, or 3 types of archers in random order.
I really want to use an autobuild feature sometimes (for when I have 12 cities and just dont care for 4 of them). But turning the cities construction queue over to a "clueless" AI governor hurts somewhere deep inside.

So I wanted to start this post to ask how you guys feel, and if you guys got great ideas, since my best idea so far includes a high amount of time setting up an AI governor every time I want to use him.

Sincerely

/signed. Love this idea. Endless Space is another AMAZING addition to the 4x genre and I *love* this feature.

Good call.

I've never used autobuild functions in any 4x game. AI can wreck things so fast.

Games like Distant Worlds is especially annoying as it's a management game more than a 4x game, except that instead of managing, all you end up doing is fixing the AI's mistakes.

My opinion is that this is an added and unneccessary function that should not be focused on. The point is to play the game...not have the AI play it for you.

I don't think it should be difficult to add... depending on how the AI was written. As long as the UI for it is good (like it notifies you whenever it starts construction on something) I don't see any problem.

I do agree that if the AI has to cheat in order to be difficult to beat I am not sure it is good enough to make good decisions here. I suppose that if the human controls the research and tax rate then it shouldn't be too complex to choose the best building but you never know.

There is no need for this kind of functionality in my opinion. Not that many cities in a game.

Wouldn't use it.

Just because you don't want to use it, doesn't mean I don't want to use it... please.
You don't have to use it.

I was hoping for a really good idea to pop up, because usually governors have no focus like real players have, and they build stuff confused.

It is not too important, especially in FE as it looks right now, but if I am building buildings faster, and more buildings are added I would atleast love to see some autopilot for cities I just want to grow big or something.
An optimal thing would be to have several "personalities" that you could modify somewhere, with what buildings and units to build or not to build. So I can put one of my cities into auto-pilot get me a lot of money mode.

It could be done with the AI already in place for the enemy AI factions. But I am against it as you lazy kids need to pay attention and learn something. You have no damn worth ethic anymore.  *_*

Seanw3, you made the "worth ethic" error again.  May I suggest it might be worthwhile... oh never mind. ;-)

Worth ethic aside, I'd like to see a working governor a.i as well.

That one was intentional. I put sneaky eyes next to it as an expression of my guile.  }:)
