World Wonder

Am I the only one who thinks World Wonders are dull? a building that can only be one of in the entire game, makes for limited use and seeing, and often these buildings are to be build first because they contain a rather powerful bonus compared to other buildings.

I personally do not like the world wonder's I have seen, and am happy that there are no world wonders in both "Master of Orion 2" and "Master of Magic". Since most other games I usually lose tons of turns building a building, because some player got built it first 1-2 turns before I would finish it, and I cant imagine how that would hurt the AI too.

I much better like factional wonders, they both help single cities become powerful, help you focus your empire, and I wont ever lose production because some silly AI somewhere else started building it 2 turns before me.

Just my feelings on this subject, and I know they are wanting to change cities in beta 4, and most of you find that as a good excuse to not touch these kind of posts, but Now IS the time to actually put out your feelings about these things, so they will know what we like and do not like before they make a huge deal out of it!

Sincerely

I like World Wonders always have. I also like how in CIV 5 they added another lair of wonders (then mini-wonders can't rmember what they are called)

Anyways thanks for answering, thats why I was asking :)

I kind of like the world wonders, it's probably the only interesting part of city/empire building atm, IMO. On lesser difficulty, it doesn't really matter too much (since you can get them all quite easily), but it becomes more interesting on hard. You basically have to decide what you want and race other builder factions (usually Altar/Gilden) for it, then put one of your city out of commission for a while building it for that nice bonus. Without these, you can just build whatever you want, whenever you want without any real consequences (which you still can, if you decide not to pursue the bonuses). It also provides an incentive to fight for cities with those wonders built. That nice friendly faction might not be much of a threat to you, but they got a nice wonder, and you'd put it to much better use... etc.

Note AFAIK, if a World Wonder's city is destroyed, then that World Wonder can be built again.  I was playing a game with Gilden as one of my opponents, and he got to all or virtually all the Wonders, then after I razed all his cities except one small one I found that the Wonders were available in my cities (all the other players had been wiped out).

I agree! I have never liked wonder races. It has always been a very 'gamey' thing. Why can't I use the awesome Great Wall I was one turn from finishing, just because someone on the other side of tge world built one?

Faction Wonders would be more characterful, help create differences, and still give players big projects to strive for.

You could still have certain 'One per World' things but they could come from quests, for example. So, save the Dragon's eggs and it will agree to settle in your city and use its children as mounts. This would be a unique quest, and the result would be announced to the world.

I like the World Wonders, I just find it surprising how quickly some of them get built.  The AI has a whole bunch of troops but is also super far in the tech tree and has built up their cities to get to a World Wonder.  I just don't know how they can pace it that quickly.

I really like wonders.

They give an extra layer of complexity to research and building order I really enjoy.

National wonder are also nice, but to have built a world wonder, especially with a nice video to accompany it, always gives a sense of accomplishment.

Actually, there's a bug(?) with how wonders are implemented atm, where if one faction queues the wonder, no one else can even build it, so there's never a 1 turn difference thing like it was in civ. Either you got the tech and city requirement to start building it first, or you never even see it as an option. There's some bug abuse to use the queue to "save" wonders that you'll build later due to this, but you can't cheat anyone out of their nearly finished wonder either as a result. Right now, the whole race is all about researching the tech and getting the city (usually to level 3). So if you decide to expand too fast in the early game, you won't be able to grow enough to build the wonders first. This is why I'll often choose to delay my expansion to grow my capital for the wonders. Then start building other cities afterwards. It actually creates a choice in your playstyle. Probably the only thing that does atm.

Also, I'd argue that faction wonders does nothing to make things more interesting. All it does is make you decide which one of your cities will get it... and to be quite honest, the decision is never a tough one. Do you ever have to actually consider where to put that college? theatre? war college? I sure don't. I don't even consider them wonders... they're just 1 shot buildings.

I HATE the wonders. They are a Civilization concept, I say leave them with Civilization. I do like the idea of factional wonders (a very strong feature) and the 'one per faction' improvements. So I am in your camp on this, Kongdej.

The opinion seems fairly polarized one way or another. Maybe there should be a 'Preferences' check-box as a compromise. Let us turn them off if we don't like them.

They need sexing up. The next Beta update will hopefully let us see our cities and wonders in glorious technicolor.

Thank god I am not the only one, that would have hurt my feelings xD... Well suppose I can't solve this riddle with "so many" people swearing they're lives to them. Guess its part of where were all different, I do hope for more factional wonders (the one per faction buildings), I really enjoy having to focus a lot of cities around these buildings, without having to rush or race for anything.

Besides building buildings and so forth is always a choice compared to producing troops to conquer the enemy cities, at some point I hope conquered cities will be worth some grain again :) so I can ignore world wonders but still not be totally backwater because I did.

Derek came up with some fun wonders in his Fall From Heaven 2 game.  My favorite was first building a city at a highly strategic chokepoint.  Then constructing the soul forge, black cauldron wonder combo.  Any normal unit that died within the city's radius would be converted into production and raised up as a legion.

Let's hope he continues the same innovative pursuits for FE.
