[912] Influence. How?

Playing my first game of .912 and I have to say it is  A LOT of fun. Large map, 5 opponents and, for the first time I can remember, I didn't start off with 3 enemy empires right on top of me.

Anyway, I can't seem to find how to build influence. Does it only trigger when you meet another faction? And I only can find one reference to it in the tech tree and that is all the way at the end, something that gives a +10%.

 It was very obvious before.

What am I missing?

There is a prestigious location resource that generates influence when you claim it, there are also a few high level buildings that generate influence and sometimes you can get it as a quest reward.

That is part of my original question: which buildings?

I read through the civ section of the tech tree and couldn't locate that info.

EDIT:

Just found that alchemist lab adds .5 influence/turn. That helps.
Had to do a Google search though. Granted, it was in the Beta notes, but I can't be expected to remember things. :)

I think there are also champion attributes that generate influence.

Buildings I know of:

Embassy: Civ tree, under Alliances

Almshouse: rare l4 city levelup

It seems that influence is a pretty rare resource.

Having played a game recently to specifically keep an eye out for it,  I noticed the low level rat quest will allow you to get a one time gift of 20 influence or you can take a weapon or some gold.  This would allow you to build one building requiring influence if memory serves.

I remember being able to buy influence in Elemental, so I imagine you can part with gildar for some if one of the other AI's have it.  That is if you want to be nice to that particular AI.  Instead of just annexing it to your kingdom,  I mean.   ^_^

Also re: Almshouse is it really rare?  I mean every level 4 I've ever seen its been a choice.  There should be more choices to label things as common, uncommon, rare.  Or perhaps its not generating a new random number and always giving the same choices.. (shrug).

You're right, its not rare, but it is for me because I rarely take it.

The main source of Influence is Prestigious Locations.

I can't say I've ever found Influence to be that useful, anyway

I seem to always get the same building choices on level-up, and none of them are ever that inspiring, even at high level. I tend to grab the Almhouse, but I never seem to spend the influence.

I am just wanting to try out hiring mercenaries.

"mercenaries" - I've never recruited any, but can see how they could really make this a big part of tha game.  One would be able to 'hire' on any array of heroes/monsters/units.  I would like to hire on nearby tribes/camps of independents to ignore my units/attack others as well, this would give the intelligent ones a little more life.

I find I need 20 here and there to build certain buildings,  but no need to really amass a horde of it.
