Does anyone else find it odd that we can equip an army with Daggers?

and/or Knives

I hardly doubt that someone could use a knife (or dagger) effectively on the open field, where the enemy can see you coming.

Maybe a knife (dagger) could be equipped onto a Champion as a "Secondary" weapon, enabling them to do sneak-attacks while in stealth mode ... but other than that I see no real use for Knives in combat.

I would consider this much more bothersome than the +6 initiative aspect, to be honest.

As I've said in another post, Wakizashis, Shortswords, and Gladii can be used for good *infighting*, but has anyone pondered the usefulness of a Tanto or Knife on the battlefield? These are for eating food, not for killing

I think the closest (in anything near reality) we could get to knives on some type of warrior would be a giant Meat Cleaver.

Sorry ... I was just playing some Demon's Souls (as a caster class), and the thought just struck me how utterly useless I'd be if I was only armed with a Knife (in addition to my fancy wand).

Even so, I always did find it odd to equip units with Daggers, but couldn't place my finger on it until now.

Anything below 1.5 - 2 feet seems somewhat silly on the battlefield imho ...

In an alleyway, perhaps. But in battle?

One does not bring a dagger to a sword fight ... not unless one puts one's self out of the fight and instead sneaks up on one's opponent.

Therefore, I don't see "an army of dagger wielders" as a very threatening thing.

Actually, I do think that there were some troops, I think the Scots, that fought with Daggers and Bucklers. But, I do agree, it doesn't seem like an ideal weapon choice. Knights use to keep them as secondary weapons and when they grappled with other heavy armored knights, would use them to stab in vulnerable parts...but that kind of fighting really doesn't fit with with heroic fantasy fighting.

Sort-of-related: how about weapon in both hands instead of sword in one and shield in the other. In that case, the 2nd weapon could be short/light/dagger-like.

My answer to the original post, I do not find it odd I can equip them with daggers, as I do not see Daggers as knifes, but very "big blades", 30-40 CM long, though the current system doesn't reflect this very well, I do like the idea of people using agility and daggers to strike fast at vulnerable spots in the armor.
