[suggestion] Throwing knives should do damage per thrower

Throwing knives are a reasonable piece of equipment for champions early on-- they can hit units at range, and if you're using some melee brute champion, this can be a real boon. They are also equippable for units, but, unlike a unit's normal attack, don't multiply by the number of soldiers in the unit, making them just about useless when unit groups get larger later in the game.

 

But the throwing knife mechanic has some real promise- it's about the only mechanism I can see that allows for combined-arms units in this game, and the mechanic could be a template for javelins, throwing axes, etc. But standing in the way of all of these is the fact that throwing weapons don't get a per-soldier multiplier, and they're just about worthless.

I laughed when I saw the mechanic for Throwing Knife Damage. It looks like this:

((Dex-10)/2)+(6) 

 

My solution was to just show the equation in the description so that people can see how to make them more effective. I would personally make them do more damage and have a high chance to crit.

Agree with OP. No reason for just one soldier to throw a knife/axe/whatever. It actually makes more sense than with melee weapons.

Whoa, Dex is good for something besides dodge and critical? Sometimes I think this game doesn't need a manual so much as a LaTeX document walking us through all the equations.

I changed the description to be more descriptive.

Throw a knife at a nearby enemy. Damage is greater with a high Dexterity, but the equation is convoluted.

 [((Dexterity-10)/2)+6]

I'm going to add Throwing Axes, Bolas, and Javelins to even out the concept. Knives will do Pierce, with a good amount of damage against lightly armored units. Throwing Axes will do Cutting with a high chance to Crit. Bolas will have a chance to knock the unit prone. Javelins will allow a unit to stand behind the front line and hurl some armor ignoring damage at tanks. 

Any suggestions from weapon experts?

The equation may not be the most concise way of expressing the desired formula, but I think it does a good job of expressing design intent: Throwing knives do 6 damage plus 1 extra for every two points of dex above average.

I agree. This should allow for Javellins :)
