[.86 bug] Units not in city when attack happens.

Not sure how useful this report will be without a way to reproduce the problem, but I had a game changing bug happen several times in the current game I've been playing.

What happened is that about three or four times in the game, I was attacked in a city, where I had several unit stationed.  In each case, the archers and mages stationed in the city didn't take part in the defense, and after losing they were left standing outside the city.  The first time this happened, I thought I must have accidentally moved them out of the city before I ended my turn, but after it happened a few more times, I realized that something else was going on.  I think there is a relationship to having just constructed one of the archer or mage units the turn before, and having just moved into the city, but I am not sure.

I think there is a limit of 9 units per side per tactical combat. I haven't had it happen, but could it be that you have 8 or 9 units and that when tactical combat begins the militia for the city takes the extra spots and so your un-used units get booted?

Nope.  Two or so militia in the city, plus the several archers and/or mages, and only the militia take part in the fight.  It happened 3 or four times, and is very frustrating, as the city that was moderately well defended just becomes a rollover for the enemy.  Like I said it was a game changer, and annoying enough that I didn't feel like continuing playing after it had happened several times.

I think the pattern was that I had just built one archer or mage the turn before, and both of the archers or mages would up being placed outside the city in the space where newly created units start.  The first time it happened I thought I had moved the unit the wrong way, but after three or four times, I realized that couldn't be what happened.  I should try to see if I can get a saved game that shows the problem, but it may be hard.

More information, although being a software developer myself, I realize that this report is not going to be worth much without a way to reproduce the problem;

What happened, I think possibly in each case, is that I left my city with the default militia defense, plus one or so archer, and when I saw the enemy approach, I clicked on the rush button.  This left me with the last thing I did on the turn being moving the new troop into the city.  Not sure how this translates to that new troop plus the other non militia troop being left outside the city when the attack occurred on the AI's turn, but just thought this additional information might be helpful.

There was an already reported bug about mage units not being able to defend a city, and if I recall correctly it was stated that it had been fixed for the next patch.  Not sure about the archers, though.

It's possible that I'm not remembering this correctly, and it was the mages that caused the problem.  I was building mages and archers, and may not have noticed if this bug only occurred with the mages.  Good news if it's already fixed. I didn't see the report you are mentioning.

These forums can be rather daunting to keep up with.  :grin:

It's been mentioned in at least 2 threads, both have fallen off the recent pages and are effectively invisible  (one was mine)
