[.86][Bug] Wild Land - World's End

So I was exploring the Wild Land that has the ice giant in it (I don't remember its name, but I think its title is something like "Guardian of World's End").

I saw how powerful he was and left.

About 30 seasons later, the giant left its frozen home and started attacking my nearby outposts.  Although I didn't expect it, I thought it was pretty cool and had to rally both of my armies to go defeat the beast (fortunately, my Sovereign was a Fire Archmage and I was able to remove over half its hp on the strategic map with a couple spells before engaging the beast in combat)...

I killed the Guardian and decided to wipe out the rest of the wild land so I could claim the treasure:  an altar that granted mastery of water magic.

I killed everything in the wild land, but the area would never register that I had done this (i.e., the greenish, wildland borders remained and i couldn't build an outpost to harvest the magical altar).  :(

I spent a while thinking about what the bug could be and I came up with a couple possibilities:

1.  The Wild Land simply didn't register that I had defeated all of its denizens (perhaps because the code isn't counting properly, perhaps because I killed the leader outside the Wild Land itself...  It was in my territory after all)

2.  The monsters that lived in the Wild Land wandered off, never to be seen again.  Since the leader did this, I'm assuming that the little minions can as well?

I spent about 50 turns searching for anything that could have come out of there but was unsuccessful.

I notice that Air Elementals can wander off from their shrine and never come back. This may have led to cases of un-guarded shrines (rather than the AI simply not picking up the loot).

Wandering beasts are fine ... but I think they should leave at least SOMEONE to guard it ;)

Air Elementals could leave other air elementals or lesser creatures behind ... the super beast could have left some ogres behind, etc.

That might explain why I couldn't clear a wild lands area in my last game.  I had killed a shrill lord outside it, maybe it had wondered out.

Wild Lands are a known bug that they don't always work.  It's awesome when they do work though.

I know, one time I got a spell that let my sovereign destroy 1/2 the citizens in a city to acquire that many hp... 1,000+ hp sovereign was pretty much invincible

I had a wild lands quest last night, but after I saved, quit, and then restarted and reloaded the game, the quest did not show up in my quest log (either on the left of the screen, under the cities, or on the quest tab of the Kingdom Report window).  I wonder if that will make it impossible to finish?

Yes, unless they've fixed it (I don't think they have AFAIK).

Thanks, I think I'll start a new game, then.  And not start one of these quests when I know I'm going to have to quit before I can finish it.

An update that I just noticed (since I'm still playing the game in which this happened)...  The quest itself has been removed from my quest log on the left side of the screen, but the area remains under the wild land control.

I'm not really sure when the quest went away, though.
