Suggestion for Upgrading Unit Sizes.

It could be, for experience of the new unit, and the amount of building turns (as percentage of new unit):

New Experience = (Original Size/New Size) x Old Experience

Training Time = (Original Size/New Size) x Normal Training Time for new unit of bigger size

which would take care of the new units needing training, and also starting with no experience.  I don't think they should be also able to upgrade equipment at the same time though.

I would be extremely happy if the devs implemented this at some stage. :)

I agree - this is a great idea.

It sucks we can't upgrade the size of our units. It could be a little OP though because of the huge hp gains from levels. This sounds like a good compromise. Might want to tone down the hp gained from levels as well.

After actually being able to viably use units, I'm not sure I agree. I no longer care that units can level into infinity, as the new group sizes/equipment/traits will quickly outwieigh the benefits of having rediculously leveled units. In other words non-leveled units will have a fighting chance against leveled ones.

How this will pan out once both sides are capable of designing maxxed out units to fight against each other is difficult to tell. My preference is for restricted level gains on regular units, higher base hitpoints and slower accuracy/hp growth, but this way (while difficult to balance) seems to be working out fine.

Summarizing: I don't think we should be able to upgrade unit sizes with the way things work currently or we will simply be encouraging the stack of doom and steamrolling mechanics.

The "Stack of Doom" is a personal choice issue.     It only happens if you choose to build and use it.     Those who like it should use it those who don't like it should not.

The real issue with the stack of doom is the failure of the AI to build its own to counter the player's.    That needs to be adjusted.

I very much support StevenAus' suggestion above for those of us who enjoy watching units grow during a game - it's sort of like the feeling in a RPG when the character levels up.    You want the regular units you started with to grow through the game.     In my opinion this would help vs overpowered champion units.    A highly experienced company unit in good armor and with good weapons might slow the champion up a bit.

I understand that not everyone will like this - as i said it is personal choice.      The SD team will have to decide which opinion helps the game be enjoyed the most by the majority of FE players.

I would very much like an ability to take an existing group of units and upgrade them to a larger group once I unlock the tech for it. I think it would need to be temper somehow. Maybe when you take a group of level 8 Archers and upgrade them to a company they lose half their experience level making them level 4 to reflect on the new recruits who arn't used to working with an established group.

On the other hand you maybe don't need that realism seeing as how your experienced army group can live for hundreds of years....

I agree with Steven's idea (come to think of it, I've said that several times before:) )

It would be great if these highly experienced units gained a special ability or two during the course of their service.  I would love to see elite units at least gain the ability to counterattack or fortify a square or charge or something, anything to spice up the battlefield:

Elite archers who can "hide" in a clump of trees. (Half or quarter physical damage taken while in a wooded tile... double damage from fire dart/fireball/fire elemental attack for fun).

Elite footmen who can stun opposing units,

Cavalry that can rout an enemy unit from the battlefield. (like in Kenata's weapon mod).

Would it be hard to program in the ability to rename a unit or add a special title to them to denote their status...

The Stalwart Band, Shieldwall of Relias, The Scarlet Swords, Kelly's Heroes, The Magnificent Seven (speaking of squads LOL)...

or if they got a standard to carry into battle?  That would be neat.

I think HP gained from levels is fine like it is now.

The problem is that units are (likely) using the same HP per level scheme that Champions are using.

I personally feel that Units should be getting a little bit less HP per level than Champions get. Its kind of funny how my 'elite fodder' end up getting 200+ HP :)

Per NaytchSG's idea above I like the idea of highly experienced regular troops gaining an ability.     This should only be when they reach some very high level of experience.   This would very much add to the player's attachment to units as opposed to their just being cannon fodder.
