Units Don't Intelligently Leave Cities

In the above picture you can see a unit of highlighted spearmen in the woods.  You can also see their path towards a larger army.  Also note the road running from the city to the larger army.

The spearmen were stationed in the city.  I selected them and sent them to merge with the larger army.  Instead of leaving via the road and reaching the larger army the same turn they decided to exit the city via the crystal mine (a square with no road) and then use all their movement going through the woods.

We shouldn't have to micromanage movement out of a city tile by tile.  There's not legitimate reason for the spearmen to have chosen the path that they did.

And when they are trained we have no way of deciding which tile they will spawn on. We need that little button for Galciv that let's us choose the exit point from a city.

I'm wondering if this is worse in .85 than it was in .77.  Several times I've tried to move a single unit (pioneers, spearmen, etc) from one side of an undefended town to the other.  In .77 they would go through the town, in .85 they go around, which is very annoying when they have to go through forests or even worse, cross a river.

Would prefer that newly trained units would stay in their home city, rather than what happens currently in .85.

End of Nathan's quote

There's a gameplay option to allow you to do that.  Check "Auto station new units".

You can toggle automatic garrisoning in the options screen.

[edit: I need more initiative...]
