Seems pretty normal for a high lvl champion. Could well have some 'interesting' items on him which bumps up the recruitment cost as well.
Must be dependent on some variable, because in my game today (small map, challenging difficulty) he only cost 350 or so. and no, nothing special to him. he doesn't even have any potential to be a spellcaster.
Yea he didn't have any great stuff, and was only L5 I think. Should have been cheap, but wasn't.
