[0.77] Movement oddity - armies leave road to go around caravan

When a full army (one with the maximum number of units in it) tries to pass through a caravan on a road, the army will leave the road and go around the caravan, losing one or more movement points in the process.  It's as if FE checks to see if the caravan can be combined with the army and decides not, when it should be letting the army stack and pass through.  Armies with open slots don't have this problem.

Ive been trapped by caravans on a narrow road.  Couldn't move in any direction because of ocean on both sides and caravans on the other sides belonging to my allies.

They are doing it (I think) because of stack limitations.  IE your army size is 6, and your max stack size is 6, it will not let you occupy the same space as the caravan (even temporarily).  This is something that should be changed IMO.

Yes.  If you can get around it by selecting one unit out of your army and then moving it through the caravan, and then moving the rest of your army through the caravan to link up with the first unit (and you can, I've done it), it's kind of silly to block the whole army from moving through.

Hey, those caravans are freakin' huge! ;)

Yeah, I bet it's either a stack issue or a bug.

I've noticed that sometimes an army will go through a city, and sometimes it will go around it.  I wonder if that movement has the same problems as the caravan.

Yeah, movement around cities is super frustrating, partly for this stacking issue, although there are other things in play too.  Will it take 1 turn to get to the other side?  3?  Who knows?!

The game should not require space on intermediate squares or cities if there are enough movement points left and they are not stopping on the square, unit or in the city.
