Champions Conversing with Channellers & Contemplating Custody from Creatively Crafted Challenges (Creepy Dungeons).

From my post on the Enemy Champions Thread:

I like the idea of hiring champions from a city or tavern, the way HOMM does it - and as quest rewards would be great too.  And in HOMM, you can also rescue heroes from prisons - maybe in FE a hero could have been captured and you have to beat a powerful entourage - and this would require other balancing to make sure that 1. the guardians are tough (can't be wiped out easily), and 2. the hero reward is worth it.  Maybe the monsters could also be paid off with a high amount of any collectable resource, like gildar, diplomatic capital or even mana, and/or finely tuned diplomacy skills (obtained from diplomacy techs in the Magic tree)?  Although it probably would be better if the monsters don't also join you - getting the hero *and* the monsters would be a bit much.

This also relates a bit to Heavenfall's implementation of Dungeons in WoM, however there could be a specific quest for a specific hero in a specific, customized Dungeon that has some RPG elements - stat-based choices, resource-based choices, tech-based choices.  And because it's a dungeon, you could definitely have monsters allowing your hero to go free if you have the right stats, champions, traits, spells, resources or techs and them just disappearing into a tunnel (which they then collapse conveniently behind them ;-)) and so you don't get the monsters as well.  (Having the monsters on the adventure map would cause a problem as where do they go if you convince them to free the hero?  If you defeat them they would disappear, but paying them off or convincing them to leave would pose a problem.)

I think it actually is a good idea, it would bring more depth and life to the game. And I'm all for adding depth and life...makes it feel less like a game and more like an experience that way.

sounds like a good idea :-) I hope the devs are listening

The dungeons in the artifact mod actually had champions you could rescue. So I approve of this message.

FE can only improve by ripping off of classic games like HOMM, Warhammer and MOM.

The tavern could be a great tool to check out quests, rumors and buy heroes. With some nice folky music and jolly voices in the background.

Beats the current system hands down.

I like it.  Recruiting from Inn's would be an interesting choice, that would effect tech and city prestige.  But... this would be a rework of the prestige system to influence recruiting.

What I might add to this is limiting the number of recruited heroes to 4.  This is the same as MOO.  If you wanted a new one you had to chose to remove one from your list.  Once released the hero go back in the pool and can be placed again in a quest/tile or dungeon.  But... you would have to un-gear them.

There's a lot of "buts" in changing the system without reworking many things so its works smoothly

Heavenfall - yes I know that Dungeons in WoM had heroes you could rescue, but I am talking about a specific hero, in a specific dungeon, with specific ways of rescuing, including paying certain resources, or having other requirements including right stats, champions, traits, spells or techs.  Although there could be some randomness with the Dungeon, like the same quests have easier or harder difficulty in the base FE beta based on what enemies you get.

All the elements of the game need to be linked together greater. At the moment, they're all horribly seperate.

Yes, and rescuing/hiring heroes would be a good way of linking the city, hero and quest elements.
