Elemental Free expansion?

I've seen references occasionally about getting a free expansion for Elementals. I got Elementals as a Christmas gift, but I haven't installed it because of the bugs, and don't want to until they're fixed. Will I be unable to get this free expansion when I install the game because I'm waiting for patches? Thanks.
