[1.20a] Display Driver Has Stopped Responding but Has Recovered (Pseudo DX Error)

I've always had this issue where about 75% of the time the display driver recovers and I get the Windows recovery notice. The other 25% of the time it ends in a DX error.

This is what it looks like right after recovery (zoomed in completely):

Occurred again in 1.19m:

[Edit] - This almost always happens on transition between cloth and 3d maps. I'll get DX errors occasionally when I alt-tab (I play in windowed mode) but the game seems to have serious issues for me zooming in/out and the associated transition.

[Editx2] No dump was created.

I used to have similar a error message in Galciv 2 when I had an old ati2600 card and updated my drivers.  Fixed it by reverting to older drivers  This was late 2009.  (Have since upgraded both card and drivers).

I see you have pretty current drivers and a card about 3 generations behind, much like my old card was when I had the problem.

Oh man, I hope I don't have to upgrade my video card. I knew I should have entered the contests!

I had the same issue on my old X1950 card in Elemental. It happened to me in the version of the beta patch that was out in early January. I hadn't changed any drivers for my card in ages, mostly since they stopped supporting int in 2009.

I couldn't tell you if it still does that, but I can assure you, that it runs great on the video card from the contest :)

Actually, what I meant was -- downgrade the drivers.  Much cheaper  :)

After 3 years, new enhancements to the drivers may mostly target feature of newer hardware, and driver coders/testers might not be as careful as they should be about compatibility with the old stuff.

Thanks Lord Cobol. I actually had the Oct '10 drivers up until about a month ago. Was experiencing the same problem with the old drivers. I fear if I downgrade CodeCritter will yell at me to update to new drivers and then post again. :digichet:

Just occurred again in 1.19m transitioning between cloth and 3d maps. I excluded the shot, same thing though... all zoomed in.

Here's some weird stuff that happens to the ZOC's when the error occurs:

Yithril ZOC - same turn as error

Kraxis the same turn as error:

I can duplicate this by moving around on the cloth map or zooming in and out on or near settlement Food1. Just happened again, same turn.

Same game, fresh load, hit end turn once, centered on Filler2, got 2 psuedo DX errors in a row zooming in and out on cloth map.

1.20 issue, same game, turn 57. Again, zoomed out from Filler 2 and in transition from 3d to cloth, BOOM!

Debug - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19969679/Elemental/120/DXErrors/120_UDFv02_57_pseudodx.err

1.20, same game. Can't really do any map transitions anywhere near Filler2. Keeps crashing the video card.

Hey,

did you try to "kill" the ati ccc before you start Elemental?

Bye,

Michael
