Firefox’s 10 Slowest Add-Ons

Mozilla is nothing if not honest.

The newest edition, ff4 is very fast. I prefer Pale Moon because I find it faster on my system.

We’re all in it for speed, security, rendering and stability, truth be told.

So, which are the add-ons that really slow you down (by significant amounts)? Thake a look, especially if your browser is not meeting your expectations regarding speed.

The article (and expandable table) are here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/performance/#addon-11

I find it ironic that “FastestFox” slows you 33%, and AniWeather by 54% is a shocker.

I use firebug since it's my business, but I had no idea it slows the browser down so much.

I hate all these stupid add-ons. Shit the world doesn't need!

None of the add-ons I have are listed. But then again the only ones I have are speed dial .... nope. The others are plugins.

Of all those I only use Xmarks and it's normally disabled unless I want to sync Chrome to match FF.

The articles is about start-up time too and I rarely shut my browser down. I would be more interested in seeing what the drag is under normal operation.

If you don't need them, don't use them. I personally appreciate a whole slew of addons that I've found good use for. For example, I have a hard time imagining my life without AdBlock Plus.

I had no idea Firebug had such an impact, though. Never really noticed.

Heh, and the only reason I ever use Firefox is to use Firebug. Doesn't really bother me too much since it's worth the wait.

@Lantec

You can do that by opening task manager while the browser is open and looking under processes in both cpu and memory columns. That should give you a rough estimate of the load it has. But then again you probably know that already.

*watch yrag hit me upside the head lol*

Uvah... Lantec is very knowledgable regarding computers. Believe me.

I knew that. He he.

   I have the minimize add-on ... so it never shuts down.

Don't mind taking a load hit with the extensions, flexibility is Firefox's strength.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you dont speak for the world. I use several add-ons on my FF browser. I find every one of them useful. I figured xmarks would cause some issues as it tries to sync when you open and close the browser, but unless your life depends on how fast your browser opens I don't see it as a big deal that it takes a few seconds more to open. I think some people tend to exaggerate too much this whole "I need it open 30 seconds ago" mentality.

I use both xmarks and aniweather but to be honest aniweather has been more of a pain lately (since the FF4 update) than useful and was thinking about eliminating it. Now I have an even bigger reason to do so.

So AdBlock is stupid? You like seeing ads everywhere you visit on the net?

Well, i have two of them... but i don't complain about speed... any add-ons need resource but it is sometime using less resource that a full software...

By example, i use fireFTP who is only a few hundred kb... if i use the software from my provider, it is several mb and use a lot more resource that the firefox add-on...

What need to be compared is the resource used by the plug-in to the resource used by a individual software/application who make a similar function...

I do not speak for the world, it was just my opinion.

Actually, folks.... the Thread was only to inform about Speed vs. Add-on caused slow downs.... and that so many complain about "This is new? This is supposed to be fast? This doesn't skin!".... and what we do (individually) to cause those problems - and to weigh whether we really need all the add ons we use. :)

I assure you - none of my addons are playthings.

They allow me to rotate images in the browser, manipulate scripts or page code, block ads and create animated .png-files on the fly. Or to run IRC as a part of the browser. None of that is useless.

Of the slowest ones, just xmarks.  Time to rate all my add ins.
