I have a bad feeling about this too. Data mining here we come. At least SD had ethics. Now impulse is going to turn into another steam-virus clone, complete with DRM and as much advertising as they can cram into it. Oh well, so long impulse.

i think that you will have to wait and see troglyte. I am sure that Gamestop knows that Impulse's success is dependent upon their business model, changing the business model would hamper their new acquisition and prevent them from re-couping the purchase cost.

This. Looks like I should just give up gaming. Pretty much lost all faith in brad and stardock.. .

This is why I hate Digital distribution. I entered into a relationship with impulse.. being ran by stardock. Now they decide to sell Impulse.. so i either have to accept whatever terms/conditions Gamestop decides to add or i'm SOL on the games i've purchased. GD I wish I could buy  MOFO DVDs of games with no internet strings attached so i wouldn't have to deal with this crap. But no DD is the "way of the future" and we have to just accept that any contractual relationship we enter into is purely one sided for the  company and a huge middle finger to the consumer.

Thanks alot for selling your end of our agreement to some arsehole corporation. Leaving me to bend over and take it for a new corporate overlord in order to access games i've already purchased.Hope the fat wad of cash you made from this deal was worth screwing so many loyal customers.

Yea, wait and see, I guess.  Just hate to see something I really like, Impulse, no longer being owned by a company I actually trust.

I completely agree. Gamestop recently acquired the flash game website kongregate, and since the acquistion the site has slowly gone down hill with the advent of more and more intrusive advertising, quality free content being overlooked for microtransactional content, etc.  However, at the same time, I can understand that GameStop has the funding available to put a large amount of additional functionality into Impulse to make it a much more robust platform.

yeah this is the kinda of thing that wakes you up from that fairytale gaming bliss.  i don't really have anything against gamestop per se, but to so easily have my games change hands without any control over it does make me stop and rethink digital distribution.  i love the concept of DD, but like all technology it can be used for good or evil. i guess we will see which way it goes. here's hoping for the better.

Recommend tempering knee-jerk reactions and remain cautiously optimistic. No need to go all Chicken Little yet.

But it never hurts to stay on the safe side and archive all your games to disc and make Impulse prompt you before updating incase things go squid shaped.

I hear ya. On a side note my squid friends are rather sensitive and would prefer use of the term octopus-shaped. B)

Confused: Hadn't Brad just posted a number of optimistic upbeat posts in the last two months about how digital distribution would play a key role in game evolution in the near future? But now he, who had a large stake in it, isn't particularly interested in holding that stake anymore? Ah well.

Can someone explain to a computer idiot how to back up games to disk from impulse please? Thank you.

I wish this news came a day later.

My guess is that GameStop gave a really good offer and Brad felt like he has too much on his plate and wouldn't be able to fight a full fledged fight against Steam. So he decided it's better to focus on Elemental and Stardock, since the main busines revenue for Stardock comes from non-gaming software.

Actually Impulse surpassed that as the main revenue source. Brad explained his reasons here: https://forums.elementalgame.com/407127/page/1/#replies

Thanks for the link Cruxador, that was very informative.

So, my initial guess was correct for all other parts except that I didn't know Impulse had become the main business revenue generator for Stardock.

You are really being over-dramatic about this.  You do realize that the other digital distribution outlets are also "corporations"?  People have already said over and over you are not losing your games.  Relax.

Since i don't trust gamestop, and i was beginning to trust SD, this news is VERY disappointing.  Perhaps SD could set up a special arrangement with the now 'alien' impulse which allows SD's current users of Impulse to be excluded from all the crappy stuff gamestop will ad(d) and remove (data mining)?  Pipe dream, I know... wishful thinking.  Too bad SD didn't keep rights to use one iteration of impulse for SD only use.

SD is keeping a DDL for its desktop side of the business.  I really think if Gamestop goes evil, it wouldn't be hard for Brad to start sticking his games there also- that's how Stardock Central, which became Impulse, got started.

Really, if Brad just announced that his games would also be going there, I'd have no worries at all.

Another one of my concerns- what about Stardock's beta cycle- would that be dependent on Gamestop?

See my replies, and if you feel this deal stinks change your avatar to show a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic character in protest.
