Can't place buildings where I want.

I played the game a few times. I believe that the first time I played that I put the buildings where I wanted. The last 2 games the buildings place themselves.

What can I do to stop the game's auto placement?

There is a button to toggle it somewhere to the left of the menu containing the icons for the buildings. It is small and easy to not notice.

It's the infinity symbol next to the planet upgrade button.

I think there is also a hotkey that I pressed by mistake a few times. Check the key assignments is the options menu.
