After down loading the latest Elemental update on 26 February, the farm and imperial farm have disappeared from the list of buildings. I'm i doing something wrong or was this deliberate?

Food only comes from food resources now. To use a resource, click on the resource within your borders and select the 'build' option.
A little bit related - in Elementerra 2 if you have more players than starting positions (like if you have Expanded Factions installed and all the different sides in the game) its possible to start in a place that doesn't have the standard food resource near it.
