[1.19j] Units not Clearing from Map Upon Death

Derek - upon killing units they are sometimes not clearing from the strategic map upon death. This also occured when I took an enemy faction capital - the units I killed in the city popped up outside. You cannot click on them or anything. End turn clears as well as a reload.

,

I need to know a little more about how this happening.

Are you killing the units in a tactical battle and they remain on the map when you exit the battle?  Are you auto-resolving the battles?  Are you hitting auto-resolve from the tactical battle screen?

Thanks in advance.

It is another example of the "Order of Events" queue not processing things in a timely fashion. End of Turn completes events and then flushes the queue as would any Reload.

Currently, things can happen so out of order you get WTH moments all the time and then have to think back. "Ahhh! Right, that was when..." but has no relevance to the current Turns events. Let's see if we can get a Pic to show...

I get the same error. I am killing the units in tacticle battle and after the battle is over, the units are still there on the strategic screen. You can't click on them. They are gone on the next turn. It doesn't happen very often.

Hi Codecritter - to second what mywhiskey said.

  • Completed tactical battle
  • Units remain on strategic map but you can't click on them, mouse cursor doesn't change, it shows the units but it acts like they don't exist.
  • The problem in showing the problem is that ending the turn or reloading a save clears the issue.
  • The only thing I think I could show is a printscreen with my mouse hovering over the "ghost stack" indicating they don't exist.
  • It is the exception rather than the rule - I remember it occurring in both a overland battle and then it happened when I took the city. The units I killed in the city spawned outside the city but the stack was not clickable or anything. Again - reload or end turn clears the stack.

[Edit] I never auto-resolve on the strategic map because of how it uses movement points. Thus, I enter the tactical battle. Now inside the tactical battle, depending on my attack/armor advantage, I will click the auto-resolve button within the tactical battle to speed things up.

So if I were to guess on this, in both instances where it occurred I for sure entered the tactical battle and then probably hit the auto-resolve from within the battle. There is a slight chance I fought both battles manually but I doubt it as I usually only do that when it looks risky.

I've been killing several units in different ways,  tactical, auto-resolve, auto-resolve from tactical units but am unable to reproduce this bug.  Does anyone have a saved game that reproduces this issue?  Like if you save before the attack?

Also, if anyone has screenshots of the units that are stuck on the map, please submit it.  It would be helpful to see what kinds of units are involved.

Thank you.

Will do. I'm kicking myself for not noting the turn in my OP as I usually save each turn while I'm testing the AI. If this occurs again, I'll definitely pass along the prior save, post-battle save, and print screen.

[Edit] Oh and thanks for looking into it! I'm definitely going to name a hero after Codecritter in my next test game. Haha.

I've had the same prioblem as the OP, hughes & wiskey.  After tactical battles only.  Starting with 1.19d.  Next turn fixes.

I've also had a similar-looking problem when I autoresolve* and the enemy is still there after I win.  But in this case, I can click on them and fight again.  IIRC, I don't get experience from these fights, the only result that seems to "take" is damage I suffer.  My fix for this is to manually fight all the way thru.   *Note: by "autoresolve" in this case I mean start a tac battle, then click the "auto" button on the bottom left.

OP's problem just happened again.

Quicksave before the battle       http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8928343/QuickSave.EleSav

Have the sovie & his 3 friends attack the foe next to them.  Slowly/tediously exploit "dominate" to win.

Save right after the battle with the dead foe still on the screen        http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8928343/phantom.EleSav

debug.err      http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8928343/debug-phantom.err

Edit: of course the phantoms are gone when I load the "phantom" save.  Knew they would be, but wasn't going to type it until I saw it.

@LordCobol - Good point about dominate. The times it occurred to me in 1.19d was with the Nabaja hero who has assassinate and dominate. Maybe that's what's causing it.

I've never used dominate though I've seen this problem many times. I think it's happened when there hasn't been an assassin in the group. But you may have something there - maybe it has something to do with the ACP mod. Nabaja sounds like a fallen hero, is he from ACP? I don't remember if I've seen this when I've played the game without mods.

I don't think it's mods as I was using a complete vanilla package with no mods. Nabaja is the female hero who has both Assassinate and Dominate (I hold out marriage until I find her as I want my female children to kick ass).

Another variable is that I found Nabaja twice which caused some UI issues: see this post here. This is the same game where this issue popped up.

https://forums.elementalgame.com/405822

At any rate, I think the instances I had were:

  • Nabaja (hero #1, renamed)
  • #1 Nabaja was battling - #2 was kicking in a city somewhere
  • Always opened tactical combat
  • Auto-resolved the open tactical combat

So maybe it's related to the hero itself, the fact that I had two of the same hero, assassinate trait, or dominate trait?

NO mods on my system at all.  For at least as long as betas last, I'll be playing only the "plain" game.

Only one Nabaja in my current game.  My realm is still pretty small.  But I do have another hero with dominate, and both are in the stack that did the fighting.

My guess is that it is a timing / out-of-order issue, like hughes said in reply #2.

FWIW, in my other issue (where I autoresolved and the enemy was still there and I could fight them over & over) -- that was in a different campaign, and I wasn't using dominate.

This happened to me in the beginning of a game with Janusk (or however it's spelled). I always have a FirstTurn save file around so I can explore a little before I commit to playing. It happened three times on reloads of the FirstTurn save. Now I wish I would have saved the file. Considering it happened to me on Janusk's spawn it doesn't need to be initiated by combat. His phantom was stuck there regardless of whether or not I accepted his offer to join my empire.

Hi CodeCritter,

I duplicated it. Please see below.

  • Loaded save game season 81 here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19969679/Elemental/119d/81_v1.EleSav
  • Moved Carielf (aka Nabaja heroine template) from settlement Huusaplige and:
    • Opened tactical combat against unit stack outside of city, autoresolved, won
    • Attacked caravan, auto-resolve from main map (only option)
    • Attacked caravan #2 (walking dude), auto-resolve from main map (only option)
    • Ended turn
    • Attacked settlement Isplaamadra, opened tactical combat, dominated the 10/5 unit, fought entire battle, won
    • Upon taking settlement, 2 of the units I killed popped up on the southernmost tile next to the conquered city (see first printscreen). Here is the season 82 save here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19969679/Elemental/119d/82-Ghost%20Units.EleSav
    • Note in the printscreen below the stack right below Isplaamadra, that is the ghost stack. If I end the turn, the stack doesn't go through a death animation, it just disappears. See the second print screen below which is right after I hit end turn to go to season 83.

Hope this helps!

Right after conquering city but before ending turn - note the ghost stack next to settlement.

Above shot is after hitting end turn - note the ghost stack disappears.

AlLanMandragoran,

I loaded up the save game you posted from turn 81, but it doesn't look like your screenshots.  I don't see a CariElf unit in the game and the city Huusaplige does not exist.  Are you sure it was the right save?   The turn 82 save looks like the screenshot and has the other cities, but is after the battle occurred.

p.s. I like the world and unit names :)

@CodCritter - thanks. Who knows what I was drinkin' or smokin' when I posted the save. When I get back in town on Friday I'll check wth I posted and advise. I deleted all the 1.19d saves when e came out so I may not be able to provide valid saves... but I'll check.

@CodeCritter - sorry for the 81 save, I provided the save after I completed the actions I listed above instead of right before... and the saves from 1.19d are long gone. I'll post again if it happens in f.

@CodeCritter - it's popped up again in 1.19j.

Dominate is the consistent thing again as 3 of my units in that stack dominate:

  • CariElf - spouse of Frogboy
  • Shirley - you can't be serious
  • Enchantress - Daughter of Frogboy and CariElf

If you look closely Lord Xia's hanging out with the ladies.

Here's the screenshot showing the ghost unit.

[Edit] When I went back to the game I clicked on the exclamation warning and it disappeared so the game knows the unit is gone. BTW this battle took place right next to Food2 (my own little Minas Tirith).

@CodeCritter - I remember one shotting a unit with Shirley due to the Assassinate skill. Maybe a one shot with assassinate or the killing blow with assassinate causes this?
