Favorite map size?
What is your favorite map size in War of Magic?
Ich bevorzuge die großen Karten zu verwenden. Und diese Aussage wurde durch Google.
Always large maps...
I usually play a medium. Although a quick game on small is fun.
However, I would really like a default map of Elemental as designed on the cloth map that came in my box set. whatever size is fine.
Always large. Would do other sizes if they were larger than large. I like epic words with epic space and take epic time to get them colonized. And lots of epic resources for me to use in an epic manner. I like to have a strong nation going long before I meet other nations.
This is how I feel. Medium seems to offer more action than large.
@mentalinstra and other medium advocates.
If the memory issues are taken care of, for those that say medium maps, what about large maps with more AI's present? This would allow for that same competitive feeling and allow for even more epic campaigns at the end.
Medium... why do you ask?
I've played on both medium and large, and I prefer medium currently because I like the exploration and building aspect of the game, but in large games, I can explore and expand to get a ton of resources without encountering an AI and it begins to feel... dull, I suppose. Having some competition to force me to make choices (do I tech for civilization to expand housing pop, with that military force bearing down on me? Or do I need troops quick?) is more fun for me.
I shall also admit that my computer is not too great, so medium maps works better for me ![]()
Medium and Large for me. I use to play Large more before, now its a mix of large and medium.
I wouldn't mind a larger option though if there is 64bit support (:
Large. Larger is better.
Medium. By the time I'm in an overwhelming position (pre-mop-up), I've already researched pretty much the entire spellbook and a large portion of the techs, and I'm not trying that hard to do so. That growth in capabilities is what drives me, far more than any desire to be a bad neighbor. So there's not much driving me onward from that point, and a larger map would be tedious.
I hereby re-plug the idea that all magic-based research should depend on arcane research only!
I use the largest setting. I normally like the largest I can get, but I don't think Elemental benefits much from going larger than that.
Fantasy game? Lots of AI players? large map.
Wouldn't really help because what Tanafres said. I can reach game ending tech levels at 250 turns with ease. I usually only need 5 or so cities max. Any more just annoy me, and I end up not really upgrading them. More space would be pretty useless and just detract from the game. I already play with almost as many AI's as possible. Adding more AI's in a larger map would be pointless because I would never even meet them.
What will probably make larger games more attractive is FE. A more interesting world full of special locations would take up space while adding diversity.
I always play on large maps because I like to access all the features of the game. Incidently, I am still playing ver 1.1 and I have never had a crash with it or experienced any significant slowdowns even at 300 AC. I am looking forward to ver 1.2 although i would have liked the Blink spell to be left in (but make it a level 5 spell). As a magic user, I need to find or grab lots of shards.
Ah, I missed that part about the research and stuff. The tech trees do seem a bit lacking - I'm working on modding it to be more fleshed out.
So, if FE had floating bits of land that you could plant a city on and would randomly move around the map, or alternate dimensions/underground areas that were conquerable, would that make it more interesting?
Yes, I'm going to keep throwing this in, along with the line of site making tactical battles more interesting.
I'm sorry but I can't play the game on any of the map sizes that are offered. I always end up creating a 256X256 map with like 20 factions on it. I use all of the game factions, the expanded factions mod and a couple I made to get up to 20.
I always play with the largest maps possible.. atm its 256x256 maps genned with cephalo's elementerra 2. you have to put up with a lot of oom's atm in the beta due to the large space required but I love epic games.. even if I never get round to running till the end.. once ive conquered the majority i tend to move on to the next game.
The bigger the better
I like medium and small maps. Because there is no penalty for building cities everywhere, I like to limit the amount that can be created. The only way to do this is with smaller maps.
Yeah I'd love to see large maps offer the same kind of pacing and strategy as medium does. Its not that I wouldn't rather be playing a huge long game its just that medium feels better to me right now from a gameplay perspective. I don't think large maps aren't worth playing or are broken or anything like that, I just prefer medium as things stand right now.
The larger the better.
160x128 (or 10x8 depending on how you are measuring). Unfortunately the game starts crawling/crashing on these maps once you get into the hundreds of turns.
Large mostly as I like expanding out and creating a bit of an empire before encountering the others. But any larger and it would be too large, if you know what I mean.
I like smaller maps, because once I get up to steam there's nothing the AI can do to stop me and I don't want to spend hours just mopping up. The most interesting game is before I conquer a faction or two as it's still challenging. Once that's done, no matter how many enemies are left, the game is pretty much over because nothing the AI does will oppose me.
