So what's this game like right now?

I stopped playing right when Derek Paxton got hired.

What big changes have been made since then? I know the spellbook was overhauled big time and the stats do different things now, but other than that, nothing.

Is there still a huge amount of random variance when it comes to dealing damage? Is there still that bug where a single survivor of a beat up unit group is ridiculously strong? Are city bonuses still weak as fuck? These are the three things that really rustled my jimmies before, I guess, so I wonder about them in particular, though any other major changes I'd like to hear about as well.

random variance when dealing damage?  fixed.

single survivor ridiculously strong?  fixed.

city bonus weak?  not fixed.

The AI is mildly better for the average gamer.  If you're a good strategic gamer, the AI is still too weak.

A lot of defects have been fixed.

Unfortunately, the game is still pretty bland if you were hoping for a rich gaming experience.  Try some of the mods... The modding community has been very active.

Not to belittle the modding community, but even with the popular mods the game is still not very interesting, to me at least. Don't get me wrong, what they add is great. But they can only cover the fact that the core game is boring for so long. I've sort of given up on ewom ever becoming fun. Fallen Enchantress could be better, but we haven't gotten any details about it so far.

Personally the less I know about FE the better. I basically purchased WoM for every feature that got cut. The base game is still dull, but, as mentioned the Updated Weapons Mod is really really really good. I'd always just auto resolve the battles with only 1 type of unit making up most of my army, but now I usually fight them out using a mix of weapons.

I actually like the game and find the early to midgame to be very fun.

problem is there are still crashes (mostly in the beta)

but v1.1 is playable
