Elemental will no longer start

I am getting the following message when trying to start the game from the Stardock interface:

"Failed to download the data file.  Please make sure that you are connected to the internet, have signed into Impulse, and that no firewall or anti-virus program is blocking Elemental."

I am connected to the internet, signed in to Impulse (multiple times just to be sure), and I have not touched my security settings in over a year.

This is appears to be the result of downloading the latest version.  The prior version would start fine.  (Except for the save-game-deleting crash that I reported previously.)  I decided to uninistall and then re-download Elemental, but the message is unchanged.  Is there a way for me to download the previous version?  Would that fix the problem?

You may have to reset your firewall to allow elemental. Everytime you update it it counts as a diff program. Normally elemental doesn't require internet .. however the beta patches do.

Or if you want you can just revert to the latest release version instead of using a beta patch by unchecking "show  pre-release versions" in impulse.. and then verifying your files.

You can bypass the error message by pressing 'esc'.

@ Vallu751   Thanks, 'esc' did indeed work.

@ Fistalis   Thanks to you also.  I didn't think about the beta version acting that differently.  Is the internet connection allowing Stardock to keep track of beta performance?  Just curious.  Since "esc' works, I will see if beta helps with the crash issues, the I'll decide between reverting to the released version or messing with my firewall.

Now, after another small patch was downloaded, the 'esc' key will no longer get me past the error message.  Nice.  Guess I am reverting to the released version.

The internet connection requirement is so certain files can be updated without having to make an entirely new version. =)
