[1.11] Fatal AI failure

AI starts game. AI builds city. AI builds peon. Game over - never enough resources to build a farm.

Any variations of the above are possible. The AI doesn't prioritize building a workshop as early as possible. It is up to chance if the sovereign will find materials in goodiehuts or not (large chance they won't). With no materials production, the game is over.

I once suggested that the starting city hub (zmpire hub, whatever, just in the first city) would produce some gold.

Because at the time (in the beta) early gold was scarce, I suggested gold, but having the hub generate 1 of each early resource (materials, food, gold) would still be useful.

I remember being answered that in Starcraft this was not the case, though, so I'm not too optimistic about the team correcting this. It's micromanagement for the player and ai both.

I don't understand what you mean by this.  A workshop doesn't require materials so a player should be able to build it as long as they have population available.  The capital provides 10 resource storage so even if the player builds 5 peons they should still be able to build a workshop.

Ive never seen this happen.

Hmm... you're right.

Then my description was poor, and I don't know the reasons. But for some reason, sometimes an AI (empire) will fail to produce a farm on a nearby fertile land, in the start of a game. I think it was because it built an archivist in the start, but then, that wouldn't prevent it from building a workshop.

All I know is the problem, not what's causing it. Anyway, if noone else has this problem it could be I'm just imagining things.

Well surely it could run out of population, and therefore not be able to build the workshop, meaning that if it had no materials it couldn't build a farm to increase its population, and therefore it would be stuck? (Haven't played for a while and can't remember if a farm needs materials or not, if it does then the obvious solution is to make it so that it doesn't, then the AI couldn't get stuck)

HF you're not crazy... I saw it happen once too...only once, but it did happen!

I don't think you're imagining it.  In another post, Frogboy said that the land one which the fertile land spawned was a problem.  I think in that case, the fertile land spawned on a Swamp, making it impossible to build on.
