[1.11] Install Deletes Custom Content?

Where did all my custom races/units go?  Please don't tell me you deleted them with no warning.

I lost everything too :P I am not making any more custom stuff until the game is done being updated like that.

I spent a lot of time on my custom races.  To have them arbitrarily deleted with no warning pisses me off to no end.  I'd love to know which of the fixes included in this patch necessitated deleting user made content.

the only areas that I 'lost' with the update was units (including the BOOK units) and races, the other areas of the mygames/elemental are untouched including the saves, the same as 1.10 did, BUT as I had already copied the files onto a usb stick , for me it is not a huge deal, just a frustration

Ok - I forgot I backed up my custom Elemental stuff on the 29th.  Glad I was using good modding practices and making changes in another directory before copying them in to test them.  :D

I would still suggest warning people before deleting stuff that's not even in the game directory.  It's called "My documents" for a reason - they are MINE.

It's done so if there's a conflict between old custom stuff and the new build, users don't come back to the forums reporting problems because of outdated content. Because Stardock employees have to investigate those claims, find the problems....and find out it's because someone is using old content. That's time wasted on a legacy problem.

Half of game .inits are stored in My Documents these days.

It's somewhat annoying since Elemental's big draw is all the customization. I hope they don't make this a standard for every patch. At the very least, on first launch of a new version, it should tell you your custom stuff has been deleted. Making this part of the patch notes would also be a nice move.

So archive it.  There is no reason to delete it.

And those games ask me if I want to delete local content when I uninstall them.  I have personally never used another program that deleted information in any My Documents folder without some sort of warning or active participation on my part.

And your second point about customization being a big draw makes it that much more important.

I don't disagree it's annoying. The level of defensiveness about your Documents folder seems....silly to me though.

It's making their job easier to not have to sort through custom content from version 1.07 or whatever, so more power to them. If it were just as simple as "back up the content", it would have been done so already. One look at Elemental's content structure will tell you it's not that simple.

One thing you can do, is to move all your old files into the Mods directory. The update never touches those folders in there. Just remember when you update though, like mentioned above, you may end up breaking things. But at least your stuff wont be deleted. (Oh yeah, and your files are read into Elemental too, so its not like you have to move anything again).

Odd, my custom files are still in the Mods folder. What happened is that all the ini settings were set back to default, including deselecting the Use mods option.

Yup.  Very silly.  :p

What can I say.  I was in a bad mood.
