Elemental: War of Magic v1.11 out
Sometimes good things come in very small packages. v1.11 is pure AI and bug fixing. Grab it now. I think you’ll be pleased.

1 got 1.96Gb aswell.. will wait till something gets sorted out.
Here i don't think cost its that bad (New Zealand) probably 10-20 dollars
I go through this if i don't set to windowed mode Before i Update.
Its usually due to your firewall asking you if you should allow elemental. Every time you update it your firewall(or mine atleast) treats it as a new program.
However Elemental is set to full screen so you don't see the pop up with the prompt from your firewall.
Alt+tab and hit enter a few times should get you through it.(assuming you have nothing else on in the background). Actually went through this today.. and after I initially got through it elemental locked up (probably due to me waiting to long to allow it). So I had to restart and all was well since my alt+tabs allowed elemental.
In order to deal with it a bit easier in the future set elemental to run in windowed mode before you update or just run in windowed mode all the time since if you set it to your full resolution there is no notable difference(at least for me). Or alternatively.. if your comfortable with it set your firewall to automatically allow new programs. (don't suggest it from a security standpoint but it will fix the issue). Or manually set it to allow after each update before you fire it up.
Yeah, the v1.1 update is ****ed for at least a few people. I've had problems, myself. Maybe they'll fix it.
I'm pretty sure it's a program problem and not an Impulse problem.
I ran the game and closed it. I shift-clicked and verified. I closed Impulse and re-opened it. The download size from 1.1 to 1.11 is 1.41 Gb. ![]()
I'll wait till this is resolved before I update. Please post if you've had success.
Did you not even read the post hes talking about the program freezing on the first load screen.. its a firewall issue.. . As I said above... when elemental updates to a new version the firewall recognizes it as a new program probably due to the fact the exe gets renamed with the version number, requiring you to set it to allow again. If you never click allow it'll hang. I know because as i said I go through this everytime after an update.
Once you allow it the first time after an update you can block elemental if you want and it'll work fine. Maybe its just the digital copy but it has to reactivate elemental via the web the first time you run it after the update. And wont run until you allow it to do so.
Its not just 1.1 or 1.11 cause i went through this with every single update since i've started playing elemental. Its just a case of firewall pop ups not showing up cause your in full screen. (or my repeated issue is.. and is exactly what he described.)
I should add that when I run Elemental, it tells me that a major update (1.1) is available, and let's me click 'Get Update'. I wonder exactly where the problem is coming from that isn't allowing the game to know what particular version is installed.
I get the same, The message shows in the main screen, tells me all about how 1.1 has Global Mana and Population as a resource, but I already have 1.1. Should the message not say 1.11?
I verified and it said "Elemental: War of Magic is not installed correctly, please look for an application update." The I clicked update and whatever it downloaded was so small I didn't even have a chance to read it, and then it said done. Lol
Just downloaded the v1.11 update, very eager to try it out! The download was 8.64 MB for me, by the way, I didn't have the 1.9 GB download problem that other people have reported.
I want to give a big thank you to everyone at Stardock who has worked so hard on this game! Your company has earned a new loyal gamer! Like many other people, I have been reading these journal updates and watching the progress of the game since its ill-fated launch. When v1.1 came out in December, I decided it was time to jump on the bandwagon and I bought the collector's edition box as a Christmas present to myself.
I have to say, I have been extremely pleased by this game overall. I never ran into a single stability problem. I have played through the whole campaign and just finished my first sandbox game, all without a single crash or game glitch. The gameplay is awesome and addictive so far. I agree that the AI needs work, as I steam-rolled through normal mode (and I'm speaking as a complete newbie here, although I do have experience with similar types of games such as Civ 5). So I'm looking forward to seeing if the AI can challenge me in v1.11, and I'm sure that it will just keep on getting better!
I'm a computer programmer by profession, and used to write simple DirectX and OpenGL games as a hobbie, so I find it fascinating to read journal entries from the developers. It is interesting to get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes when working on a game like this. Keep up the great work Stardock! I'm sure I will be a loyal customer now for many years to come. ![]()
I do have some suggestions for improvements to the UI, maybe this can be worked on a bit for v1.2:
1. When a city is idle and you go to the build menu, it would be great if the city resources stay displayed at the bottom of the screen. Often I make construction decisions by thinking about what resource generation can be improved (i.e. if my city generates a lot of tech, I want to build one of the improvements that gives a 25% tech bonus). I keep finding myself having to close the build menu, check the city resources, then open the build menu again. A minor inconvenience, it would be great to see the resources and build options simultaneously.
2. When an event happens such as a roaming monster destroying one of my farms or something, it would be nice if the game map would focus in on the monster in question instead of just giving me a generic message such as "your south-east farm has been destroyed by a bandit". These message boxes force me to hunt around my vast empire and figure out where the offending creature is. I like the Civ 5 method of focusing in on enemy movements as soon as something enters your territory. After all, your territory is supposedly filled with your citizens & spies & other loyal subjects, so it makes sense that somebody would report suspicious creature movemenets to you when something nasty enters your territory.
3. In tactical combat, sometimes the action text above combatants heads (-5 hp, <dodge>, etc) disappears and the only way I can tell what is happening is by observing changes in the army life bar at the bottom of the screen.
4. I've noticed that sometimes city names get duplicated. For example, I had a city named Elvander, then noticed another city suddenly got renamed Elvander too. When I zoomed out to the cloth map, the names corrected themselves. But when I zoomed back in, the wrong name was shown again. I'm sure this is probably already on a bug list somewhere, but just so you guys know it still needs to be fixed.
Anyway, that's my two cents worth of feedback for you. All of these are minor issues, but would be nice if they're taken care of for v1.2. Thanks again for making a great game, and it will be fun to see how it continues to evolve over the coming months!
I was shocked when I read how expensive bandwidth is for you. Just out of curiosity, what kind of Internet provider do you use? I live in Japan. I've got a broadband connection and I pay the equivalent of maybe $70 USD per month for unlimited bandwidth, so it makes no difference to me if an update is 2 GB or 2 MB. I didn't realize that a lot of people still have to suffer from maximum bandwidth restrictions, that's an eye opener for me.
Played for a long time last night and was impressed. The AI was certainly making advancements and had well defended cities. Lucky for me though they focused on upgraded soldiers and not groups of soldiers, but still nice to see. At one point I haas a power rating of of 200 anf Capitar was somehow sitting at 420. With the race of the nations warning of impending doom due to the might of Capitar.
Why can't Stardock get in touch (by Private Message) with people with the 1.99 GB (or whatever) update problem and nail what's causing it so no-one will have to worry about it again?
Best regards,
Steven.
Played some game now. The AI was obviously outexpanding me (I'm slow
) and then Altar and Capitar declared war on me. That was in turn 120 or so.
AI had about 6-8 cities each, while I had 4. What it didn't had though, was good units. So I built my 14 attack, 9 defense on Worgen Battlemaidens. Each city of mine built one of them and then I grouped 2 of them up each and went out, slaughtering about 50 enemy units in total and conquering all enemy cities of Altar without a single loss.
Biggest battle was on the enemy capital, 2 of mine vs. 10 Altarians and their Sovereign. My units lost about 2 hit points in that battle...
Then I went on, trying conquer the Capitarians, when a small army of them appeared next to one of my cities. I moved my defender out to attack them, killed them and woosh, Capitar was no more, guess one of them was their Sovereign...
Imho the game has still some problems. One of them is, defense being overpowered early on, making units with high defense invincible and secondly, the AI Sovereign should really never leave their territory during war, it makes them just way too vulnerable.
Also, the AI declared war but never attacked my cities and even when it was obvious that I was steamrolling them, they refused to make peace with acceptable conditions. Hey buddy, I just conquered half of your cities, destroyed your armies and you still demand 200 gold from me to make peace? ![]()
Does this fix the OOM error? There is no point in me testing this patch and playing it if I am going to get OOM error when I reach mid game every 15 minutes.
Saw this in my game last night. I had an army close to their capital and the enemy sovereign waltzes out past me like he's taking his daily exercise. By himself! While back in his city there's around 6 soldiers properly defending. I almost didn't attack him just because I felt bad picking on him - but then I did.
Also noticed the lack of agressiveness of on the AI when in a war - this was on normal.
It's not actually going to download 1.9 GB. Instead it'll analyzed the files on your hard drive comparing them to the files on the server, and then download only those files that are missing/different. Of course this "Preparing to download..." process can be quite lengthy, but the actual download time is usually very short. I don't know why Stardock can't figure out a way to speed things up because it is rather annoying.
another unfortunate who had to download 1.91 GB. I don't mind for a whole expansion or something like that, but for a minor incremental patch it's a bit much.
Well it seems to want to download the entore 1.9 gig to me. It goes through all that preparing business then starts downloading 1.9 gig. I cancel it because for a small patch i don't think it is worth downloading the whole game again.
My experience with this patch has unfortunately not been good, I'm curious as to how other players feel about it.
Ever since downloading this patch, I have experienced a huge drop in framerates and overall performance of the game. updating to 1.1 made the game run smooth on my machine, along with improving almost every aspect of the game. Now, similar to when the game is released, it is choppy and hangs for awhile when I end turns. Whenever a building gets upgraded I hear the sound of a building being dropped once for every single building of that type I have in my empire. Hearing that sound 17 times in a row is extremely annoying. Also, the menu overlap that plagued the initial release appears to be back, which unfortunately makes the game look amateurish. And I have had the game crash twice, that hasn't happened since 1.10. If this had been a beta patch it wouldn't bother me so much as I usually wait for the full version, but thus far it has been a step backward.
Looking in the forums, I'm not seeing similar posts from anyone else. The only configuration change I have made recently is updating my nvidia drivers. I would be surprised if this was the cause but who knows. Ill mess with some graphics options and see if maybe there was a change.
I got time tonight to play the new patch, looking forward to seeing the new AI. Going to play as Xander I think, love that kid. Probably have to uninstall and re-install the Destiny's Ember stuff again. btw, if you are curious, I make him rule over the nation of Xanderheim, because I am not very creative.
The only speed change I've noticed is it seems to take longer for the AI to take their turns. Graphically it runs about the same as it used to, on both my i7/5970 and my e3300/GMA-X4500.
I was however a bit disappointed that the game still sometimes doesn't advance to the next turn in multiplayer even though it says everyone has ended their turn.
And I have also had to abandon my first game on the new patch due to it not advancing to the next turn. Something else that never happened after 1.10.
Bah
Another multiplayer problem is that it always fails to save the game now, where it'd sometimes save in 1.10.
No need to nerd-rage. He was able to download the update, but not run the game. It may be something firewall-related, but it is a problem with the new .exe incorrectly trying to access an un-needed update. The fact that 1.1 worked and 1.11 doesn't strongly suggests this.
Edit: Though I did read his post, I didn't read yours, though you can hardly blame me. You may be right.
You nailed it Vandenburg...
Let's give each other a big hug because the 1.11 AI is better than all previous AIs. Unfortunately, the AI still won't attack you when it declares war, still sends unprotected pioneers out all over the place, still doesn't group their armies well, makes questionable choices when building cities and troops and upgrades, leaves its sovereign vulnerable to attack, does not do tactical battles well (not Brad's fault), demands money when its getting steamrolled, asks for treaties and arranged marriages when there are no treaties or arranged marriages to be made, etc., etc., etc. And we're calling this version a 7 out of 10?
