I've heard a few comments around the forums that lead me to believe that at one time chainmail was at one time an armor type IG. Is this true and if so why was it removed?
Yes, chainmail has been available in different versions. I think it was removed because it didn't fill a gap, other items had very similar stats and costs, and were available at the same time.
Thats a shame. I hope its brought back at some point. I would like to see more variations in the armor. Right now its a little boring.
I am personally hoping for that old school fantasy standby, chainmail bikinis myself. 
Chainmail, Scale Mail, padded armor, and Patchwork armor were all in the game and taken out, I mean, come on, who doesn't like less options, am I right? Seriously, give me this shit back and make them light armor without penalties, take less resources, have less protection and be the advancement of light armor.
I miss those armor types too. The world felt more fleshed out with little details like those armor types. I know they were redundant but it added to the feel that this was another world.
I completely agree with Xia on this.
