Stabilize the Game Platform

by Aww Nuts

I have read through a number of posts and IMHO the game crash situation is my number one priority.  If the solution is convert the game to 64 bit then by all means Godspeed.  I appreciate the other ideas folks have offered regarding Quests, Clans, Items, and whatnot but without a stable environment, all the bells and whistles don't mean much.  I just finished a game (Large, Challenging World with Challenging Opponents) that towards the end crashed every 10-15 minutes.  I am sure others have experienced this or worse.

As I said this is just my humble opinion.  Maybe we need a poll to have everyone vote on their pet features.

Urgh. Although Iagree that fixing the crashes should be top priority, 64 bit is definitely NOT the solution. It would mean many many players, who have a 32bit OS, could no longer play the game. Come on. I'd demand a refund in such a case.

Although new features are certainly sexier, all the greatest features in the world don't mean anything if the game isn't stable.  It is the #1 priority in my book too.

And although 64bit is awesome for larger maps, more textures (therefor better graphics) and more factions/monsters/etc.  It doesn't help with stability that much.  Sure we have more memory to leak into for memory leak issues so some players may go longer before a leak kills their game, but the leak is still there.  And crashes are still crashes on either base.

Well the game is better, but that same memory leak is still there. It crashes non stop later in the game. Honestly if they have not fixed it by now....I just have resigned myself to accept that this game will always crash. It is a lot better than when we went through all those beta oatches though.

Some things are unforgivable like the laggy mounted combat. They actually went through the trouble to semi fix this but did not finish the job. Fixing the animations so they don't delay and lag combat is a straight forward fix and should have been done ages ago. This game still needs work...it is in a playable state, but really not worth playing much.

Tactical combat is at a  basic level...I mean it's what someone who did not have any experience making a game might first do. First and foremost there should be more to running to opponent B and hitting one button. The terrain HAS to play a huge part in placement. And the AI must be adjusted to deal with this. I do get tired of constantly hearing how this cannot be done because of AI concerns. If you cannot do anything of substance because it is too hard then why are you making games? Other games can pull this off, a mod community with the source code could do it...why not a game company who we pay?

On the tactical battlefield you should be able to fortify to take up defensive positions. Enemies running past your fortified units should be subject to retaliatory strikes for trying to skirt the lines. So they cannot just run past your front lines....and also for the love of all that is holy we ought to be able to arrange are units prior to combat. So many OLD OLD games let you do this. And this is not even an AI concern.

Additionally, I have said this before and I'll say it again, we need to be able to undo moves....it is quite disgusting that this is not in game already. There was actually a fanboi here who defended the clunky system as it is now, saying you should not make mistakes. What a load of complete garbage that is. Trying to access that special crushing blow using that NARROW -> arrow? Ah OOPs pressed pass turn....wait I'll just cancel that...nope not in Stardock's world. Nope that is permanent, same with the game auto selecting your next character in battle. NO matter if you select one individual if it is picking for you it does it, and you can move the WRONG character easily this way. NO undo..no indication where and who is moving...it just goes on its own. All of these things show the lack of polish in this game and give it a very lightweight feel like a really B rated movie.

It's just not ready for primetime.
