Thanks for the reply Brad. I hadn't checked on here as some of the problems went away when I disabled AMD powerboost for the video card. However, I do still get the game crashing unexpectedly at least once every hour or so. It seems that the only repeatable behavior is when i get impatient and try moving the map too soon after the turn is over/starting again. Otherwise, I haven't been able to tie the crashes to any certain behavior.
The crashes are annoying, but the lower frequency has made the game playable.
I will try your exe assuming I can figure out how to do that 
I assume I just unzip the file and replace the exe with the one in the game folder?
