Help w/ intelligent use of buidings in cities??

I'm a little confused about what buildings I should be buiding beyond the original basic ones...

For example... Granary are only useful where you are producing a lot of food.  Ie cities with farms?  Only cities with farms?  How can I tell from the city stat sheet, which ciites can use a granary?  The food stat is usually a net amount i think.

After that, what about merhants and marketplaces?  I assume all cities produce income largely related to their population since there is not income producing tile outside of gold which i've never even seen....

How about Inns?  I think they increase prestige so I assume all cities can use them?

How about Town Halls?  All cities?

Is there a way to see the gross amounts of the various stats for a city?  Before it's adjusted for what the city itself is consuming?

All advice is very, very much appreciated...

At the start of the game Granaries are only usefull in cities that have farms, oasis etc..

Once you research irrigation you also get gardens, that is when I add Granaries to the cities I build gardens in with irrgiation

As your population increases your income does as well, by adding the merchant and market place you increase your income even more. Remember to create 3 trade routes from EACH city. This will not only increase your income, but create roads for your armies as well.

Inns are ok AFTER your city has hit level 3, as by then your income will cover it's cost, I would not build it ealier. Townhalls decrease your upkeep of THAT city by 25%, very important building!!

In the games I have played during the beta for v1.1 and v1.1 I have very few cities that level up past level 3.  To get the most out of a level 3 city all you need is two houses, market and merchant.  If the city has a farm connected to it you add the granary and irrigation.  Once you learned gardens under the civic tree you place them in all level 3+ cities for even more expansion.  The garden will balance out the two houses in a level 3 city which pays you back the 2 food you wasted on the houses.

When it comes to leveling a city inns and pubs are good, but I usually have a group of champs that travel and sit in the city to level it up.  It does not take many rounds to get a city up to level 3 with a 2+ prestige.

Town halls I usually only put them in cities that are usually level 4 or 5 because this is where I am going to have the most production building for tech, arcane or just multiple buildings that cost gildar every turn.  This also goes for the labor hall.  You should really only have a few towns that go above a level 3 and focus on something.  This way you maximize on buildings that give bonuses and dont waste your population in buildings such as town hall (25 pop I believe) in small towns that do not have nothing, but maybe a granary, irrigation and garden.

Everything above is based on playing the kingdom side only.  I have not played the empire side since release.  This is not for any reason other than I find it harder to see roving monsters with such dark ground.

Hope this helps!
