Loving this game thanks to map editor!

Hi all

I tried playing the new 1.1 sandbox game and really hated it. Resources are bland and Creatures are all over me right at the start and my flame dart A.K.A Creature killer is gone! Gone!!?? Yea, hating the changes to the magic system in general. Before, you were pretty much forced to use magic frequently just for fun because the units manner got full, but now, with the global manner system, you never want to use magic at all just for fun, only if it is absolutely necessary. So the old system forces lots of magic to be used, kind of like a 'war of magic'. The new system forces you to be conservative all the time, kind of like a 'cold war of magic'. Conclusion - name of game should be changed to 'Elemental, Cold War of Magic'.

Anyhow, I managed to get the map editor working last week and edited one of the saved maps (since random map generator won't give single continent). I used a large map and put 2 AI on one half and kept the other half for myself. I put my capital in the middle to stop the AI getting past. The best part however, came from boosting the pitiful amount of resources on the map, and what i gave myself, i also gave the AI.

Now i have been playing this map all weekend and absolutely LOVING every minute of it! I strongly recommend to anyone who isn't all that impressed with this game, to dust off the map editor and have a go, it is brilliant!!

But yes there are a load of "the magic system needs a massive overhaul" threads. And the map editor is a truely amazing tool.

Only thing is that it removes the entire explore aspect of 4X. I like explore it's the most exciting and game defining phase of 4X.

Preserving the explore aspect was easy! First of all, i have a terrible memory!! hehehe, second of all, the changes i made to the map were very specific to just a few locations. From my sandbox game disasters, i noticed lost libraries can easily be completely absent entirely. This is unacceptable, so i made sure there was at least 1 in my area - did the same for Lore buildings as well even though they are more common. Then i put 3 gold mines in one location, 3 metal mines in another and a farming pool of 7 farms in another location. In hindsight i should have added a location of 3 materials resources as well, since that is causing problems for me now, i never could have guessed the random seed would leave me short on that!! but it did!!!! (on half of a large map i got just 1, plus the one that i added at my start location, that's it)

Anyway, all in all, probably 90% of the map is completely natural and up for exploration.
