confusion over oak spear

I'm playing a game with a faction that does not stat with any item or war tech i have discovered 3 tech 2 civs and a magic, so why do i have access to the oak spear at the shop for my heroes ? Is this unlocked by city size ? My city is currently at a population of 35 - lv 2 city i guess (one upgrade), lv 1 city ? anyways - this just seems odd to me because i have done nothing to unlock it, it is just "there" I thought items for heroes unlocked at the same time as items for units so this is confusing to me.

This seems to be a bug. My advice is enjoy it while it lasts as it can be hard to get attacks stats high enough in the early game without it.

Don't let it go the way of the talking wolves. X(                                                  :fox:

apparently it is linked to city size, i just checked right  now before and after my city levelled.

edit oh btw, i had the perfect start to the game, food, gold shard right beside my town - silly me i didnt research war tech and my sov, a hero with oak speares, and 3 peasants (army size 24)  died to a pack of creeps (wolves, spiders and something else) army size of 45 lol next time i am making 10 peasants to tank for my heroes and rushing war tech after i get my 1 civ for harvesting

Some items are defined by city size.  Looking at the Kingdom City Hubs.xml file:

Level 1 cities have gnarled club, staff, salted pork & traveling boots.

Level 2+ cities pick up Oak Spear and Healing Nectar.

It makes sense that you could buy a few spears from roaming traders for a Sov or hero, but not produce them yourself. Also make the game a little easy though. For better or worse I guess.

Oak Spears should be nerfed , along with Warstaffs I believe.

That said, for the expansion I'd like to see equipment restandardized, with modifiers vs certain troop types.  Maybe something like one  of the Civ mods where Axes get bonus vs Spear which get bonus vs Cav, etc...

warstaffs are a little crazy at 15 why bother with a shield XD

wooden staff technology > sword technology

He wields a stick... Ruuuuun

also, i still haven't gotten the hang of using the nectar - is it in a fight or out of a fight you use it ? the food seems to be out of a fight, but the hero holds the nectar and troops can use it ? very confusing.

ps - i've had my spearmen running around with the padded helmet, armour and bracers with the healing pack - does not seem to be regening in combat, guess that was nerfed, it is 1 regen per turn now in foreign land i guess - but i cast arcane weapon on all of them in one turn - funny how you can cast one spell in combat  but multiple outside of it. So my spearmen are running around with 16 attack, 7 defense and about 30 hp and nothing can touch them at the moment, they may as well be heroes themselves

A turn in tactical combat represents seconds where as a turn in strategic represents 3 months.

Warstaffs are fine, as long as they only become available at the same time as similar swords, hammers, etc...

At one point, they were removed from Sovereign creation.  Not sure now, as I've seen them under 1.09v.  That might be Kenata's weapons mod talking, though...

That being said, a lesser warstaff for earier in the tech tree might be nice.

I think war staves are fine if they go their own way in the tech tree, having a seperate class you can research. The current implementation makes me use them in the ealry game to wtfpwn level 1-2 creature ans then go for mundane and magic swords in the mid to late game. Not wonderfully balanced, but definitely better than not having enough weapons at this stage.

Yeah a basic spear is just a stick with a sharpened point at the end. It really shouldn't need any tech; it really shouldn't be more powerful than an axe.

I can't wait until making weapon characteristics more defined becomes an item of business in the patches to come. Like the previous poster says, there needs to be multiple tech tracks with different types of weapons (polearms, blunt weapons, swords, etc.), each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

First 1.5 sentences - I agree

Spears should be a bit more danergous than a normal wordsman's axe if for no other reason than the increased reach/range and use versus mounted units from a historical perspictive.

WarStaves are pretty much the only weapon in the game which is balanced against the current armor values.

Everything else is either WAY too powerful, or horribly underpowered.

My cities don't get oak speak until they are leveled up to 2.

An interesting feature would be to not allow new weapons and armor on heroes to be bought unless you build markets.

That wouldn't seem right.  I'm the king and they are my heroes; we shouldn't have to stand in line at a stall to get our equipment.  :)

you're right, im not familiar enough with the late game stuff simply because my games never last that long - i blame the ability to research recklessly down the tech tree in any direction i want to get a godly advantage over the ai. As it is, when i get warstaves + arcane weapon +groups thats good game its over....

I dont even need all of that, it's just gravy to end the game...
