I have three mods installed (1.09p) and almost all loading crashes and almost all saving produces unloadable saves.

I have (in alphabetical order) Adventure Content Pack v0.66, Expanded Factions 5.0 and Updated Weapons 1.15 installed on Elemental v1.09p.  I am playing White Wizard as Sovereign of Empire of the Golem King.  Almost all save games are corrupted (can't load without crashing) and loading games crashes almost all the time.  I'm not sure how much is the particular combination of mods, and how much is general instability.    Any ideas on what's causing this extreme instability, and does anyone need some of my save games?  I would be extremely grateful if we could work out what's causing all the crashes and corrupted saves.

Best regards,
Steven.

I've had almost the same problems; the corruption? of save games happen after a number of turns (from 134 to over 230) - while I play everything is ok, but when I reload the game it either crashes or (the last time, yesterday) the cloth map is completely empty of any faction /or at least my faction/.

I have Adventure Content Pack v0.66 and Expanded Factions 5.0, playing as an empire faction with custom sovereign.

Just to add that this last time I reloaded after my sovereign died, so that's the possible reason for empty map. However, the reloaded game shouldn't "remember" my sovereign's death 8(| .

Can't remember if the previous corruption happened after Sovereign's death - I think it was sovereign's wife's death.

I get the same problem however I am not using the expanded factions, just updated weapons and the adventure content pack so perhaps the problem lies in the mixture of these two mods.

Well, the only mod out of the three posts in this thread that is common is the Adventure Pack (unless there's more than one issue causing causing the save and load instability).  How will we narrow down the cause?  Could it be to do with mods and using Empire factions?

Steven.

Sorry about that everyone. It seems I have missed a rogue <ManaCost> tag in one of the files. I've removed it and put a new version of ACP up. I also removed a couple of the abilities that have given me problems in the past (they weren't anything original, just copies of two other in game spells with their damage changed).

Just wondering, were you by any chance doing a quest at the time?

I found that errant tag in the ranged section for the bow the ranger uses in the Ranger's Boots quest. So, if you went and fought him, or had him join your party, I can see why it crashed. Well, I hate the fact that one little line (<ManaCost>0</ManaCost>) makes the entire game crash, but that's another story :P. By the way, you'll have to start a new game for the new version to apply. Save games save all the XML info so when you load a saved game, it loads whatever version you had at the time of saving.

This poses an interesting question.

Obviously, crash resports with mods installed are pointless because it may be the mods that crash the game.

But what if there's a problem not with the actual mods but rather some unknown error in how they are processed, or some such? In that scenario,  it is possible that ANY mod could crash the game even if it's "flawless".

So, how do we find a crash that may be caused by using mods in general, but not by a specific mod?

That's a good point. Blind luck? Heh. I think I'm going to start send in crash reports with mods installed.

You know, this is weird. If you put any other tag in the XMLS that means nothing, nothing happens, game runs fine. Yet with manacost, the game crashes. This tells me that maybe there's still code in the game which at least tries to use it?
