How do you increase your area of influence?

Area of influence grows from cities. To make your cities grow more influence, you need to increase the level of the city, by allowing more population to live in it.
Stardock Forumslots-o-houses If you have plenty of room, you'll grow to have plenty of influence.
At this time I don't believe there is a whole lot that increases influence without also increasing population. At some point in the future I hope we'll see more that plays with influence ( "Just cause", the spell from MoM always makes me think of spreading influence)
