when units gain a level

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but  it's thanksgiving here and i'm in too much of a hurry to search the forums. I know what happens when a hero gains a level but what happens when a unit gains a level ? do they only get more hit points ?

Yep

It would be nice if some things were a given in level up, while some things were a choice.

For example, with the Sovereign, offspring, and champions, base stats like to-hit, hitpoints, and moves should be increased incrementally on each level up. You then get an option to increase other things like STR, INT, etc.

I would also like to see "heroes" gain experience over time.

since people have brought up heroes, aren't heroes supposed to gain feats as they level or did that not happen ?

I think he means like in Fall From Heaven 2: A special hero that does indeed gradually increase in power for no particular reason. It worked quite well in that game. But that was because it was a hack of the Civ IV engine. We can do better than that. We just need our Champions to be tougher.

Or like MoM, all units gained 1 XP per turn regardless of what they were doing. Winning in a combat just meant they got MORE XP that turn. Of course max XP for a regular unit was around 120 if I recall, so it took quite awhile before a unit would level all the way up for doing nothing.

I have no idea about what KingHobbit meant by "heroes," but I definitely want to see some sort of non-combat experience for champion units with administrative abilities. That might look like "doing nothing" to a combat focused player, but to turtlers and other less aggression-centered players it would look like a perfectly reasonable corollary to battle champions gaining power by winning fights.

I really like this idea. 120 turns seems about right, too. I'd argue that you'd want to have a 10 turn 'delay' after aquiring or building a unit, then start automatically giving them some set amount of XP per turn if they are in a city with full move at the end of the turn.

sticking a farmer in a city should lvl him up.. or admin. or other similar.

would be even nicer if there's a choice of making them even better in those fields.

One could argue that units can undergo training in their idle time, and hone their skills in the academies when stationed in a city, or gain experience through travelling and having to scout, set up defensive positions, organize watches, logistics, etc.

It would be a good way to make sure that your less used units don't fall too far behind in the mid to late game.

yes that's right, and MOM also had a life spell to give units max xp when you made them, and the final "unit" type building in the warfare line gave units maxp xp as well - the spell just saved you time and money at the cost of mana per turn (only had a small upkeep though).

So no one knows anything about the feats for heroes ? guess they nixed it then or planned it for a later expansion.

It talks about choosing feats for heroes at level up in the manual, but it doesn't exist in the game. Since it made the manual I assume it is a feature that is at least partially worked on and so I would bet that it will show up in an expansion.
