novice AI rework please

Hi I am trying to learn the research trees and spells and playing with stuff. The novice AI tends to expand pretty fast compared to trying to finish out research and his ruler usually suicides himself against one of your towns that the AI has no hope of winning the battle. I really would like to research everything fully and to play around with stuff. But its very fustrating to get half way through or so researching and the game ends after many hours of play and all that time waisted. I have tried 3 times now and I am never able to get close to finish the research trees.

Also if anyone has suggestions how to accomplish this please let me know. currently I am picking myself and one enemy AI on novice difficulty.

For now, download and play one of the custom maps with islands.

Good chances are that you will not meet your enemy unless you want to.

Play large map sizes and restart the game if the AI spawns too close to you.  For example on Tiny maps I play one AI, on small I play 2, on medium I play 3 and on Huge I play 4.  I like to take my time slowly getting my empire set up, and as such most of the time if the AI spawns right next to me (even if it's my own faction) it will declare war.   Sometimes I don't restart, and kick it's butt, other times I just restart the map.  Or you can do as random_target suggested and play a map with islands and basically ignore the AI.

Add more AI helps a lot, as does set pacing to fast, which lets you research faster.
