Death of Enemy Sovereign

I would like to see a couple things happen when a sovereign dies.

First lets look at when my sovereign or even an enemy sovereign loses a battle but escapes.  I think there should be a certain amount of time before the sovereign could be used again.  I would also like to see the first in line offspring possible try an take over the kingdom/empire.  Come on, say it with me.  Mage Battle.  That would be cool.  It shouldn't happen everytime, some sort of randomizer---you shouldn't have blood thirsty children everytime.  Perhaps the time it takes to come back could be based on the amount of mana remaining or spell skill level.

Now with enemy sovereigns.  Unless it is the last sovereign I would like the kingdom/empire continue.  It is disappointing to see a kingdom/empire disintegrate the way they do.  I would like to see one of two things.

1.  The first in line offspring takes over after the enemy sovereign dies.

2.  the kingdom/empire turns into city states, or perhaps breaks up into couple NPC kingdoms.

Thoughts or suggestions.

I have suggested this myself.  In Romance of the Three kingdoms, when a ruler dies, there is a meeting between the heirs, advisors, and generals about who should take over the leadership.  Sometimes they all agree and a new heir is named, some times, their is conflict and the nation breaks up into warring factions.  I would love that for this game.

I thought I read it in a thread somewhere, but I couldn't find it.  I figure with 1.1 and the expansions coming, would be good to talk about.

Love the idea. I would really like to have my nation to splinter if i manage it badly or due my Sov dying.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms has a ton of good ideas ready for the plundering, hell, they made 11 of those games.

Kinghobbit reminds me that we need some kind of little person race in this game.  Maybe all you smarty pants that made that cool elf one can make a Gnome one or something.  Little people!  On motha f'ing ponies!

AoW has had haflings since the first version, and they have always had ponies.

Excellent point! I do so miss having hobbits/gnomes around to abuse.  In AoW I always made a point to pick on the hobbits and their stupid ponies.  I don't know why but they just annoy me... they always just seemed to "happy"...

Age of Wonders, which beyond small folk (it has three: halflings, dwarves, and goblins) has quite a bit Elemental can learn from. Like multiplayer that is really worth playing and archery that is not overpowered. And lets not forget that AoW has a hex grid.

Never played it.  Maybe I should...

The entire series is on Impulse as a bundle if you decide to get it.

I would recommend some race specific units and buildings.  Would also add a little more depth.

Might have to check out AOW as well.  Is it related to the Age of Empire series.

I thought of another option if the enemy sovereign dies.  If another kingdom/empire is allied with them, perhaps have them take it over if no rightful heir is available.

Perhaps related to the charisma of the Heir in line for the throne, with the player now in their shoes. For every point of Charisma, one city (and its associated garrison) stays with him/her, and a higher chance of other family members not breaking off to join these other groups.

I think it should be 'The most powerfull offspring', otherwise we would just not beef up the first in line..

That would be your choice.  But I would want them to still lead my armies or guard a key city.  Besides, you would have to not beef up any of your children.  If you die and defeat your first born.  You have just delayed the fight with the one you did beef up.

I like the idea of a Sovereign being temporarily out of commission when they escape a battle.

Regarding the dynasty card, I have a query. If a player's heirs can take over for them, won't that force opponents to have to hunt down and kill all of an enemies lineage to win a conquest victory? If so, that could get a little tedious.

Perhaps defeating a Sovereign in combat will cause them to be banished for a period. But if you also demolish or take over their home city, that Sovereign is permanently defeated, as you have removed their power base.

Something definitely needs to be done.  I had a game going as Kraxis, and the most powerful nation on the map, Gilder, declared war on me.  A few turns later, the sovereign of Gilder, alone, marched up to my capital where nearly my entire army was garrisoned, presumably to settle the war in a duel or something, I dunno.  So I sortied out and killed him easily, causing the entire kingdom of Gilder, it's cities, it's people, it's history, to vanish without a trace.  It was like the second cataclysm or something except at least the first one left dungeons and the like behind.  Surely in this instance the worse that should happen would be for Gilder to dissolve into quarreling city states or a succession war between the successors.

(of course the AI shouldn't have kamikazed its kingdom keystone like that in the first place)

That is the exact same reason.  The enemy Sovereign didn't go crazy, I actually got lucky and cut him off.  If memory serves it was Relias.  ANyway the Kingdom had 11 cities that I knew about.  It was a hard fought game and it was a little disappointing.  I had a another Sovereign to go but, they were weak and trapped in this little corner.
