Anyone else getting excited for DCUO?

I used to play WoW with a girlfriend. She became very obsessed with it. And in the end it was very destructive to the relationship. But in hindsight, maybe I should have introduced it to her sooner. Another girlfriend introduced me to riding horses. She's a famous dressage rider. I hope it works out.

I think all MMO's will end up disappointing. Maybe this one wont. But it probably will.

Due to lag and the track record of MMOs in the last couple of years, it will probably suck. But I find this part pretty strange. "Actual player skill"?

Have you ever seen a top WoW player go against a medicore one? The difference is night and day. Player skill matters a great deal. This game sounds more like a twitch game.

Well the arcade elements could be interesting if they are done right. I mean when you get down to it, if your going have any chance of competing in the MMO market you need to have something about your game that makes it very different from the others. Because if you just make a WoW clone then people are going to play WoW instead.

With that being said it's a big risk and it will be very tricky to do right. Most likely it will fail, but that's true of every new MMORPG.

I actually thought Champions Online was pretty cool and suitably different. I stopped playing it though just because I didn't know anyone else who was playing it (they were all playing WoW) and I didn't feel like trying to join a new guild of strangers or anything like that.

I think this one will be good as well.  It is a simul-release for PS3 & PC though, so I am a little concerned about the "simplified controls" that some of the previews talk about.   In any case, this one is on my list to check out.

It's going to be just as bad as Champions Online and STO.

Conan did "player skill" combat, but you stopped noticing after a while and it does nothing for the rest of the game.

Only two MMOs worth looking out for:

SWTOR: It will be very cookie cutter, but will be polished and in the Star Wars universe.

GW2: True evolution in the MMO genre. Dynamic events with in world consequences, hub areas DESIGNED to be social with plenty of mini games and RP opportunities, and active combat. Not revolution, but definitely evolution.

I'm a DC Universe slappy over Marvel Universe, so I am not completely unbiased.  However, from what I have seen from the game, it definitely has piqued my interest.  The promo movie is jaw-dropping, and since my favorite character (Deathstroke) was featured in it, I was elated.

That being said, MMO's have this new mindset of building up hype to spark initial sales then dropping the ball.  I hope that this doesn't fall into that trap and they have actual intentions of maintaining the game for years to come.  If so, I'll probably be a lifer.

True, very true. I know there's skill involved there, I was a WoW player for more then a few years, but that's not the "skill" I was talking about. The skill I mean is actually getting out of the way of things. Like when someone tries to shoot you, you can move before the blast hits you. It doesn't work that way in WoW. In WoW if you use a skill or a shot on an enemy, it hits as long as they aren't too high above your level, you can't really "dodge" by moving out of the way. In DCUO you can. That's the kind of "player skill" I was talking about.

It's definitely worth keeping an eye on. I'm not going to run out and pre-order two copies or anything, but I definitely want to try it. If I get into the Beta and it's good, THEN I'll think about buying it for me and the wife. If I don't get into the Beta and can't try it out, then I'll wait for launch and see what reviews and players say.

The latest MMO I was burnt by was STO, so I'm wary of these start-up MMO's that are coming out all over the place and flopping miserably after launch. I'm not counting APB in those as I never really looked at it as a true MMO, but rather a persistent tournament shooter.

As mentioned earlier in the thread though, lately most MMO's seem to build up Hype for sales, then start going downhill right after launch. I'm hoping some of the strength of the DC Universe will keep this one going.

Man, I dodged that bullet by playing beta for 2 days and realizing that it absolutely sucked.

They really dropped the ball on this one from the beginning, too.  The preliminary concept of STO was that your character was a crew member of a starship, not a starship captain (which really trivializes starships).  That preliminary concept was rife with potential.  Imagine your "guild" or "clan" being an entire crew of a starship and your starship your "clan house."

THAT would have been something special.  But I think they got scared of all of the potential whiney punks wanting to be captain, so they just let everyone do it.

They should have stayed within that initial vision...

I agree and disagree here. I like that you start as a "acting captain" more or less and that you get your own ship. The combat mechanics are decent too. I do think though they should have went with a more "On the ship" style of game-play though, you're right. The thing with playing in a Star Trek game is though, Everyone wants to be a captain, so that's something you have to take into account. They definitely ruined the game though. It takes like a week, maybe 2 weeks, to hit max level. That's only playing 4 hours or so a day. Also they killed the game with "Instances" so badly that it completely destroys any sense of "Community" the game could of had. It's really sad because I wanted STO to be so much more than what it turned out to be.

At first i was going to ask what a DCUO is, but then saw MMO and figured it out. Derived Content Used Over(and over and over)..

Not really interested in the setting, and every MMO since Ultima Online just lacked in the immersion area. I still play WoW, though, but mostly for the PvP and the "something to do with old friends" aspect. It's pretty much a glorified graphical chat room with mini games for me. UO was different, but oh well, bygones...

But back on topic, I'm sure that Sony will manage to suck any life out of DCUO that it might otherwise have had.

Hehe it's funny, one of the biggest complaints that the old school EQ crowd had about WoW was that it WASN'T a glorified chat room. Back in the EQ days you basically just sat around waiting for things to kill and spent far more time waiting for things to happen then playing the actual game. Many people really liked that aspect of the game and they hated the fact that in WoW you actually spend time doing stuff and don't have hours of time to just sit around and talk.

Personally I always grouped UO in the glorified chatroom category too. It did have unique mechanics, but it's game play philosophy mostly boiled down to just a sandbox world without any goals to accomplish. So even more then EQ it encouraged the whole concept of chatting and roleplaying because there wasn't all that much going on in the actual game unless it was something you created. But again many loved that, partcularly the roleplayers who often viewed the lack of story or goals as giving them an opportunity to create their own.

DC Universe eh.

99% of superhero games have sucked the joy out of it for me.

Let us know how it is, I doubt I'll even try it without your recommendation.

The reason I'm hesitant to believe the gameplay bits is The Matrix Online...nevermind its problems the combat system was entertaining and unique.  They had to dumb it down to reduce glitching iirc.  I'd think the possibility exists for it to happen again.

I played the Beta for 5 days.

The game is certainly fun.

Powers are just diverse enough, there is a good deal of loot to be had which I like

I have to assume that the leveling was ramped because I was able to hit level 20 pretty fast.

Good mission selection, mix of fetch missions and seek and destroy missions.  there are also awards within missions for killing certain numbers of enemy types.

I found the game to be responsive and fun.

I am not a big MMO fan but I am really thinking about getting this one.   The only drawback foe me is I wanted to play this on the ps3 (which is were I beta Tested) but the PC version is 10 bucs less and offers the option of lifetime subscription for 200 bucks

I got in on the PC beta for a bit, and couldn't stand it. The controls for PC are terrible. They didn't bother doing anything to make it work well on PC. You still have to go through layers of menus that were obviously designed with console controllers. On the PC at higher resolutions, the game also looks pretty terrible. It's also obvious they didn't try to much for PC graphics-wise. Compared to Champions Online, the power particle effects are junk. I made a guy with Fire powers, and it looked like I was lobbing orange balls at people, on all maxed settings. I can't speak too much for missions/questing as I just couldn't get into it because it's a very lazy and sloppy PC port (complete with oversized text for everything because that's what the console needs).

Undoubtedly, on PS3 this game can work well. On PC? I think it'll be pretty fail.

I had some fun on the pc version.  Played in the beta as well.  I'm not sure if I'll be picking it up or not, but they've run some pretty cool things so far.  When the beta ended, they added a "batman from the future" played by jim lee, etc.  Neat idea anyway.  I don't think I'll be getting this one, though. 

I still don't know what to think of CO.  It seemed like too much of the design was a little iffy.

I was a great fan of CoH in its day but its day is past.

Not going to touch it.  It sounds like an MMO designed around a consoles controls with a PC design program for an expanded customer base.  It smells and looks way to much like a port.

CO was great fun to play when you were leveling. Cryptic's main problem is that there's nothing to do after you reach the level cap, this is present in every MMO they make. They craft a really fun experience as you get quests and do stuff, but once you're maxed out, it just stops.
