Ugly Children

All right, I really wasn't expecting this.

I usually take the penalty "Ugly", because even on large maps I'll have the game wrapped up before kids become a factor.  All that is left is mopping up AIs who are hidden by the fog of war.  My Soverign was ugly, but still managed to pop out 4 kids between battles.  The game lasted much longer than normal, and my first child turned 18.  I thought this was a good chance to see what the hype about hiers as champions was all about.  So I check out her stats... Normal strength, ok.  Normal dex, no problem.  47 essence, sweet!

And then I see... she's "Ugly"!  Dang Stardock, isn't that a bit harsh?  This is my child you're talking about!  You might as well have Frogboy pop up and say I'm dressing her funny.

Not cool Stardock.  Not cool at all.

Perhaps a chance of also being ugly would be less harsh.

Heh, does the game require your children to be 18 before they reproduce ? Talk about political correctness. People in medieval or ancient ages would marry a lot earlier than that. And in Song of Ice and Fire they marry at 13.

Age of adulthood could be another distinguishing factor between factions. Some would allow earlier, some later. You could take diplomatic penalties if you married your children (or let them marry) earlier than some faction approves.

End of James009D's quote

I noticed that all my female heirs had "tight boots" and 1 mp, and when I try to go to the item shop later in the game travelling boots are no longer on sale, what's up with that?

All traits are inherited to children of the same gender. So if you're female, all your female children will have the same trait, they also get bonus abilities that don't show up (since they just copy their parent's history/trait). This also work for your spouse. If your spouse has a nice trait, the appropriate gender children also has it (one of the nicer things about the dynasty system). The only problem is some effects only work at the start of the game (warlord, naturalist, etc), so the children don't really benefit.

Ugly is broken though, as far as I can tell. This is probably because the <Dynasty_MaxNumChildren> definition in ElementalDefs overrides the trait, so you always end up with 4 children. It is essentially a free couple of customization points at the expense of being called ugly.

As for the age of marriage/have a child thing, children only comes available to be used when they turn 20. So that's the earliest they can marry and have children.
