[Suggestion] Watchtowers should be buildable everywhere not just inside cities

Watchtowers shouold have a visual range of about 10 tiles, it should be possible to build them in any tile in own or neutral territory. If an enemy watctower, built in neutral territory, becomes part of a city territory, its ownership should shift.

As they are now they are quite useless

Alternate suggestion:

Increase Watchtower's vision range substantially. Make it 6 squares, for example.

Master Of Magic has a similar problem. City Walls are useful during sieges, but they increase vision range by +1 to 3. Considering many units had movement of 2, it didn't help much. And food is too valuable in early game to spend on scouts.

Yes, towers should be buildable anywhere within your territory, and they should give a defensive bonus to units stationed in them. Other units should not be able to pass maybe in a one square radius around them. This will make it possible to build defenses at strategic locations.

How about a "tower builder pack" for units so that you can design a specific unit for this purpose, similar to pioneers?

Garrisons and zone of control for the win!

I'd like to see Towers build-able outside the city limits (worker unit, anyone?) but I'd also like to see the addition of build-able fortresses (unique upgradable city hubs) that can be used for military defense and bonuses.

There were hints here and there in the early betas that the devs were considering things like watchtowers, walls, and forts outside of main settlements. I'm still hoping to see them too, but I suspect the current situation is related to the idea that Civ-style settler/engineer units (persistent work crews) are 'not fun.'

The watchtower could also serve as a basic fortification, IMO. That would simplify things and still be realistic.

Watchtowers should just have their range increased a little bit (like two squares) when appropriate fort techs are unlocked. At only 10 gold a building, they should not be that overpowerd as the suggestiions would do to them.

Love the idea of watchtowers.

Possibly have them increase the visible range only when "manned" by a unit.

That would be neat, especially if watch towers were the basic level for a series of rural fortifications: tower-> garrison camp-> wooden fort-> stone fort, something like that.

I like that.

re-enter: city spam and teleport exploitation =/

As much as I do like the idea of having fortifications outside of a city, I already hate the marring of the beautiful map when cities begin to go all over the place.

I could agree to:

1 Watchtower buildable per city owned. (and this is after hopeful 1.1 changes that will make building more cities a pain/less able to)

They are NOT teleport-able to.

and I like the sight only when manned idea too.
