Version 1.08, didn't hire a hero of the opposite gender for a long time, finally did, got married, had 4 kids.

 

Wife had drunk a few essence potions, Sov. had 160 odd essence, thanks to a large empire (large map) and many Temples of Essence.

 

Our first child, a wonderful girl, reached adulthood.  I was going to marry her off to Altar, to cement relations, but thought I should actually look at her stats first.

She had Essence!  Lots of Essence.

How much you ask?

1364 essence.

 

Needless to say, she didn't get married off.  In fact, she took command of the armies and her doting parents followed her around and cheered her on.  It didn't take long for her to win the game for me - teleporting around for the Master quest, she killed all opponents in every battle for the quest with Arcane strike, took two for the last fight.

Apparently the essence of your children is tied to spawn rating for some reason (don't ask me why - I don't know). So later children tend to come with a sick amount of essence right now (will be changed later). But the amount of essence hardly matters, it's the mana regen that makes them good in battle.

I had one kid born with 2003 essence (not joking, had lots of essence boosting techs and buildings though).  Unfortunately everything else about the kid was garbage, so he went around terraforming and summoning, so he wasn't a complete waste.
