Difficulty in placing improvements

Is there any trick to getting improvements exactly where you want?  Sometimes I'm trying to extend my city in a particular direction.  I carefully select a square that goes in the right direction, but upon a left click the map suddenly jumps slightly and the improvement gets started somewhere else.  Is there some trick of how exactly to use the mouse? Some option I need to set somewhere to get the mouse to be more accurate?

It is trying to center I think. You can cancel by hitting the (x) next to the building in the queue. Then try placing again without moving the screen. (a fix is needed though)

Ran into that last night, it is annoying!

Thanks for the comment about centering -- but even after being told about that, I would try to center the square I wanted and the map would still jump sometimes; it appears to be very finicky.

This has been irritating since the first game, the only workaround is to zoom the map down so that the city covers the whole screen, then it won't jump.

Add me to the list of people irritated by this bug. It's not game breaking but it happens regularly enough to be frustrating when you select the right square to bring a resource into the walls and it ends up on the other side.

Workaround is this: place your first improvement anywhere.  This automatically centers your screen.  Then, without moving (except maybe zooming in or out if you wish), cancel the improvement in the build screen, and place the improvement exactly where you want.

A bit annoying but you get used to it (and less annoying than the 100+ crashes when playing a typical game...and you get used to that as well eventually)

Totally agree, at least 50% of the time my building attempt takes a left turn at Albuquerque!
