Like many others here I was waiting for this game to come out for many months, and like many others I was a little disappointed in what we got. If your interested in seeing a what the magic system and combat could/should have been like, got take a look at the Age of Wonders series, especially number 2 and it's expansion. The combat even looks and feels better and it's 5 years old. It has the different Races like many people wanted and a tonne of cool spells for combat and global.

Dominions 3 was a bit better than AOW insofar as magic goes.

Master of Magic was dramatically better as far as magic usage goes.  Infact I think I'm going to go back and play Master of Magic and the new Civ 5 game for 6 months and pray that Elemental is enjoyable in the future.

The zooming really shows off the beautiful detail in the world. I often play zoomed in almost to ground level because I like the look of my armies marching through the world.
