108b - Plenty of problems

So far in trying to play 1.08b this is what I have run into...

1. Champions will not let me recruit them

2. It appears the targeting issues from previous versions are back, I have one square targeted, and one of the adjacent squares gets the effect (on moving characters, on building buildings, and when targeting spells)

3. Starting creatures are CRAZY strong, like bandits with 7-14 attack strength and 13 hp wolves.  All supposedly lvl 1.

4. I have started at least 2 games where not only was there no gold mine nearby(supposed to be by default now), but neither was there a fertile land within my LOS.

5. I guess I get watch towers automatically.

6. WHY would I EVER have a market now? 1 gold for 1 food is a TERRIBLE trade off, Gold is considerable easier to get than food.

hmm i understand why they did the food for gold.  but i think it could be implemented a bit different.

Well the good news it seems is that my game no longer crashes to desktop. Im on turn 900 without one crash, there is still the annoying slowdown though.

Howdy,

1.     Champions are not, in fact, recruitable NPCs, they are aggressive NPCs. You'll note that any NPCs that are in fact able for recruitment have names and such. It's intended to be this way.

2.     They are indeed back, bot not to anywhere near the degree that they were at way back in the day (for me at least). Right now this seems like a minor issue.

3.     This isn't too bad, they're not overtly aggressive at the start, which is okay, and having some strong creatures around gives a bit of challenge to the game, also with the new revamped magic rolls it's not too hard to take out these kind of creatures. The scalability of creatures over the game is definitely starting to improve, but it still needs some work.

4.     The seed system is still a bit rough and definitely needs some work, there are definitely enough variable food sources that there should be no excuse for one not appearing where it definitely should, and maybe more sources of gold would help this as well. That being said, I always like to have a bit of a meander at the start of a game to find somewhere that suits my lifestyle.

as 5. isn't really worth comment.

6.     This is yet another attempt to stop things like city spam and other common 4x problems, but yet again it's not really going in the right direction. As you've said, gold is quite common, and is in a situation at the moment where you're starved for it up until a point, and then it just gets ridiculous how much you're earning. If they want to stop city spam and ridiculous imbalance between early and late game resources they really need to implement a more advanced upkeep system, it's a basic requirement in any high end 4x.

I have to say, the game is starting to feel a little less rough around the edges, there's still work to be done, but it's starting to look like there might be a ray of hope somewhere in the distance, or at least a cloud with moderately greyish silver lining. Stardock has realised what they've done and are starting to make steps to reverse it.

I say good job  , keep it up guys.

Regards,

i don't.  only a moron(or a large plantation owner) would build a merchant now.  it is just not worth the cost.

Neither do I.   And if they want to stop city spam, why not just increase the  minimum distance between cities ?

Actually I was talking about named NPCs... Many others are reporting this as well.

It is very strange, according to SD it is supposed to be that the NPCs are higher lvl than your SOV so that is why I can't recruit. But my SOV was lvl 8 in my most recent game, and I couldn't recruit more than 1 NPC...plenty of money, but I could only recruit 2 NPCs...the others are named but I get the talk bubble with the X through it...And they are NPCs names I recognize from my games in 1.07...  Plus I just got the dreaded OOM error on turn 309

Game is getting more fun, but I think that the wait until February would have made for more polish.

Markets should really be kicked up to 3 or 5 gold per turn.

it is the level of your related adventure tech that is the problem, not the level of your sovereign.

A moron with 6 extra food for the first 300 turns of the game.  I built 2 and they produced a few hundred guildar before I eventually wrecked them.

Actually, I didn't think about that for some reason. That's a pretty good idea; get your money's worth out of it then destroy it.

^hey... that's actually a good strategy.

Yes it's a good strategy, but more of a loophole exploitation. You're forced to make a tough choice that you can avoid at a later date. They do need to figure out what they're doing with the whole scarcity of resources feel of the game, because it's just coming out jumbled.
