escaping combat

I just started playing, and while this specific situation doesn't matter much, I do want to understand how the mechanic works. I have a pioneer that has been attacked by a spider that far outclasses it. I have run to the glowing tiles on the edge of the combat board, but it will not allow me to move onto them. Am I wrong that these are the "escape tiles?" Why am I unable to escape with my pioneer? are there conditions for escape?

I've done my best to search this topic on the forum, but no results clarify my situation.

Thanks!

Run towards the light.  After the 4th/5th unit escaping, the rest of your troops become demoralized and they are dead.

A talent would be nice like Tactic. (lvl 1 deploy units, lvl 5 orderly retreat, lvl 10 Great deploy (units get +2 to attack or def),....).

A hero talent that you can learn at certain lvl ups.

I didn't see anything official, but from what I can tell, lower level units are unable to flee combat.  This would include pioneers.  Heros and such can move on the glowing tiles to get out of combat, but cannon-fodder isn't so lucky.  They have to stay behind and do as much damage as they can before getting wiped out.

I am usually able to escape combat, but there were a couple times when the tiles over the edge of the map by the visible light would not let me move onto them.  I think the computer randomly generates inaccessible obstacles, and it happens to do so on the escape glowing-lights on occasion.  That seems to be one of the many serious bugs with the tactical combat maps.
