edge scrolling still horrible

Hello,

the edge scrolling in the lastest patch is still horrible. Its far away from beeing smooth. With patch 1.6 I was able to lock framerate at 50 frames. The scrolling was acceptable then. Now, that the framerate slider is gone, the game locks frames at the value of windows refresh rate which should be 60 in my case. But then edge scrolling is really bad, stuttering and in short horrible.

Please fix edge scrolling or reanimate the framerate slider...

Or is there a config file where I can manually set the framerate locked to 50??

Greetz,

Yigor

The framerate will be limited to your monitors current refresh rate and this cannot be disabled.

Are you able to provide more information on your setup?  Have you forced VSync in your graphics driver control panel?

I cannot scroll at all at the screen edge - I thought it had been disabled. The only way I can move around the map is to zoom out on one spot, and zoom back in on another.

Disable forced VSync and see if that helps.  VSync can produce horrible results when the frame rate is below the screen refresh rate.

hello,

turning off forced VSync is even more horrible, the tearing is unacceptable, its worse than using forced VSync on.

I second OverlordCW´s comment, give us back that framerate slider, with frames locked to 50, the game was really more enjoyable...

Hoping for a fix / returning framerate slider,

Yigor

I don't seem to have that option anywhere.

Scroll with left click drag. It works smooth. Annoyigh thing is that it sometimes make you deselect an unit. It is done the same way like in GalCiv2 but in GalCiv deselection isn't happening that often... or maybe Galciv has a great FIND button that I can always use?:)

Was it just the slider that was removed, or are these Prefs.ini settings also ignored now? -

GfxThrottleFrameRateFrameRate=40
GfxThrottleFrameRateMaxFrameRate=400

(I suspect it's all disabled, but it doesn't hurt to ask)

Full screen?  Edge scrolling doesn't work in windowed mode, even if it's windowed at native resolution (and appears to be full screen).

That's why we need that frame limiter back in so we don't have to rely on vsync.
End of OverlordCW's quote

You do not need to rely on Vsync to limit the frame rate.

The game now has a built in frame rate limiter which will cap the frame rate at your refresh rate (or the nearest it can get - 60 Hz screens tend to cap at 63 fps, 120 Hz screens would cap at 125 - because 1000/60 isn't a round number so you can either go slightly faster, or slightly slower - more accuracy would increase the cpu hit which would end up reducing the overall FPS for the average user).

This limiter also has the ability to cap the cpu usage when the frame rate cap is hit unlike the previous frame rate limiter.

The key difference is this one is somewhat more reliable than the original where asking for 60 fps would often produce 120 fps in menus and 80 in the game.  Additionally this limiter is always on (there is no point in the game allowing more frames than the screen can draw).  If your PC can't manage this number of frames then things work the same as they do when you have no cap.

If you install fraps what frame rate are you actually getting when scrolling is poor?  It may be the problem isn't a frame rate one, but something else thats causing scrolling to be inconsistent.

I get 63 fps and that is bad, because it causes horrible tearing while scrolling. It should be below the refresh rate and not above it.

ill check with fraps and report back,

still at the office, so it may take a while...

ps: but I am still wondering, why the game was nearly smooth edge scrolling with that framerate limiter set to 50 frames... o_O

63 FPS causes tearig?

I get 40 FPS at cloth map

25-35 at strategic map

18-20 at max zoom without cloth map (80%)

edge scrolling have none or very limited FPS impact. I also see none or very little tearing (with forced v-sync or aplication controlled).

Apart of above I find edge scrolling at minimum 100 speed too fast and unprecise, so I stick with left drag.

But. I'm also for bringing back the turnable FPS limiter - somehow I believe I could get more FPS without limiter:)

ok, it took its time, but I used fraps now to determine framerate.

while edge scrolling around the map (which is still stuttering) my framerate jumps between 51 und 61 frames
