There needs to be some kind of auto-defend

So I have been playing the crap out of elemental and it occurs to me, I really wish I had some method of auto defend. As it is now, I can move a stack out to the wilderness just beyond my borders and periodically look to see if they need to deal with some troublesome units. However, I would rather have a unit that would protect a small area of land and seek out battles from enemy units in that area.

There is a Guard button. Have you tried using that?

He means defend more than one tile so he doesn't have to hunt down garbage mobs.

End of Filthgrinder's quote

Guard currently has no reliable effect I've been able to determine.  It doesn't take units off of the tab-to-next-unit rotation, nor does it reliably take them off of the auto-next-unit rotation.  If it did do something when an enemy unit came within range I don't know that I'd be able to tell that from randomly popping up as active.

Now, if it's meant to work like Sleep did in the various Civs, where the unit is considered inactive and ignored until it 'wakes up' due to an enemy unit moving next to it, that would be great.  Somewhat less effective than Civ, since there's no control area for units, but hey.  Now they just need to get it working, one way or the other.

A guard tower (exert area of control and units inside attack anything entering it) could be a neat mod project.  I'd use that mod.  Is it technically feasible?
