Do stacks stack? A little confused about squads etc

I am a little confused about the whole individual vs squads vs etc numbers of units.

When I was creating one unit at a time, they happily subsumed into my main guy's army.

But the 'stacks' (ie a 4 man unit) didn't seem to.

This left me wondering how to get them involved in a battle against some foe at the same time as my main guy's army... help?

Also, these 'stacks' seems to take a similar time to make as an individual... but act as one and die as one. It's all a little confusing.

Can anyone offer a simple explanation?

Thanks!

EDIT My confusion seems to be as much a function of buggy UI as anything else. Ug... as every says, you can see something glinting in here, but you really have to work to love this game.

They are treated as a single unit, which is very weak game design in my opinion, and could do with an overhaul, much like the magic system.

what i want to know is how, if at all, i recombine survivors into new squads etc, if it's even possible at all.

and if there will ever be a retraining/upgrading mechanic. it always bugged me this never made it into gal civ 2 and i had to scrap every generation of ships to build new ones.

Do you mean that you are having trouble getting stacked units to join your army?  (Stacking the army, not stacking a unit)

If that's the case my guess would be that its the UI glitch.  Its kind of annoying.... but units in the same tile don't always belong to the same army and you can accidently remove the unit from the army by clicking on the individual units too.

If that isn't the problem, my guess its some sort of bug.  I have had no problems combining stacked units with non stacked units (besides the UI problem) in one army....

If its the UI problem my advice is move the unit to an adjecent square, and then move back to the original square (with your main character) then just to be safe deselect the army, and reselect it..... then try attacking something.  The stacked units should join the battle.

perhaps I reached a units/army limit?

all I know is, I moved them into the same square as my army.  but when I moved the sovereign, they did not come along. Did I miss a 'merge' button somewhere? Because I never needed one before.

I did get a new stacks tab, though, showing two stacks - one of my army, and one of my 4-man stack.

I am not aware of any army limit.

I have had the same problem.  For me its the UI....  Sometimes when you want to select your army you can "accidently" select one unit instead.  Try my suggestion.... if that doesn't work then you are having more problems them me it seems :-S

Since your having the two army problem, this sounds like the problem.

I don't think you can recombine them. Not sure on that though.

There's a limit on the number of "units" in an army, which is something like 10. A squad should count as 1 unit. A couple of squads shouldn't be a problem to form an army, but if you have a bunch of individual guys too you might be out of space.

So there is a limite.  It could be that too.... but if you have not reached your limit..... try my solution.  :-S

Honestly, the more I play this, the more I think the whole thing is fundamentally fubar.

Management of different army 'stacks' is (in the campaign at least) is  fiddly and often doesn't work at all (UI bugs?). Units end up scattering all over the place, combining or not combining, using up moves as they appear in random places (when you click the arrow to disassociate them from an army).

The  concept of squads itself makes little sense to me; a 'squad' simply seems to me to be a more powerful single unit.

Blergh. The tactical battles are kind of fiddly. And why does moving a square take two action points?

This game was waaaaaay off being ready.
