Next Time Just Wait !!

Man, I just had a great time playing the game, I'm older, let's just leave it at that, so I like to take my time, I like to name my champions & some regular units to if they do good in battle... ;) ...So in my game I'm at war with the Magnar kingdom they got me out powered but I send a couple of unit's in to pick off some of their less equipped units, I've got a son &  just got a new daughter. I'm playing as Tarth so soon I'll be able to convince New Pariden to war with Magnar by marrying off my son to their daughter plus I just found my 3rd fire shard for my fire based Sovereign...Hello Fire Giant !! his name is Ember's..............Turn 171...........OUT OF MEMORY

I was so disappointed....I purposely with for the patch (1.05) at the time before I purchased the game. My computer is fine to run this game, shouldn't be a problem, never had this happen with any other software, game, application or anything so it's not the computer, I'm not going down that road, I know enough to know the difference, just wanna play the game.

I just don't get why you guy's at Stardock just didn't wait, you guy's have the power as a independent to do this, it's your strength !! Hardly no one else has that in the industry, plus you have managed to build up a good name for yourself over the years. Anyone reading the forums can tell this game was not ready for consumer release, I mean if you want to put this on your site as a beta with the warning it is what it is that all well and fine, but you guy's have got boxes sitting on store shelves as finish products.

O.K. I'll wait until you guy's patch it up, but it just get's old & good games like this one are rare. It's just the same old thing, personally I'd like it if you didn't even say when the game was coming out that way maybe you wouldn't  feel pressured to release it. On the other hand if it's a money thing than I guess you gotta do what you gotta do & I can't blame you for that, my job wasn't to different.

Well anyway Hell of a game...stick with it but next time take it from a old fella PATIENCE !!

Im in the same boat. Cant play this game as it is broken for me. So far money I spent isnt worth the game. Just waiting on the patches...

Out of interest did you submit your error log in the support forum so they can gather more comparison data to make sure the next patch covers the issue you had, or are you just hoping the patch will correct it and accept that if it doesn't that you will be waiting and hoping for the next one after that will?

That wasn't his point. He was simply using his own personal experience to comment on a larger issue. Next time read the post you are commenting on before laying on the patronizing.

I started getting out of memory tonight for the first time ever. But I just went from Medium map games to large games epic speed. Started getting out of memory errors since then. I think I managed 300 turns before first one. Now have auto save set to every turn to be on the safe side. Seems to OOM about every hour or two.

Make sure you set the 'autosave delay' in the options to zero. Makes out of memory errors less painful, as you lose next to no progress by starting the game again and reloading the autosave(it autosaves every turn)

Also, someone reported that turning off 'use localised data' in the options got rid of the out-of-mem errors for them. Cant confirm tho(i dont get that error here)

As for why stardock didn't wait - they had shelf space reserved for august. If they didnt get it out by then, soonest they could was february next year. Personally i prefer they release august so i can play a patched game by end of september than having to wait till february, but YMMV.

You can assume you have problems that others have but IF there is some peice of software in the past has changed an element of your OS, that has held back some driver, software link or connection, that even just mildly increases the memory load, then the problem is not going to magically go away because of how they do the next patch.

I work 40 our weeks undoing the minor registry damage caused by bad software and malicious downloads. I have seen the games get bugs from simple registry cleaners closing options meant to be open for software installs.

If you have the time to complain about how great the game was going before it crashed, why not spend an extra few minutes to send in a report.

I do it just because the sooner the game is stable the sooner they can focus on multiplayer and content.

I really do think Stardock missed an opportunity with Elemental and are going to suffer. They should have delayed the release a month and spent that month in with all the beta people doing balancing and playthroughs. They ESPECIALLY needed this to fix the darn memory leaks and performance issues, that's down right inexcusable to me.

I would rather quicksave like hell, as in my experience certain things like freshly produced units seem to be missing after reloading an autosave.

Some people are assuming Stardock can release the game at will. Anyone who has been following the game knows this is not the case. They had a choice to commit to this retail window, or one next year. They went with the earlier. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Not defending the state of the game, or even the choice of when to release, but I think it's important to understand there are business agreements that go on behind the scenes that dictate these things, and after a point it is no longer a matter volition to any practical degree.

Oh come on. It was patently obvious the game wasn't going to be ready, and hundreds of posts on the forums before release is testimony to that. I dont believe for one instant that Stardock didnt release it knowing full well it was buggy and unfit for release, and I must say Im not impressed with being lied to.

However I trust stardock to make it good, which is why Im not giving it 3/10 user reviews like I would had it been released by EA or Ubisoft.

yeah because if it had been EA or UBISOFT it would have been like  ( ha! ha! we got your money!  now on to the next project!!!)   sad but true >:(

First off thanks stardock for re-posting

Your right, &  a younger me would do just as you suggested, but I been around that block with this and I've found that again...just wait !! it seems they are working on it..... Got patches coming out.....might even fix the problem by the time I submit a report, get a response, see if it works...repeat as necessary... & to be honest it's not the end of the world, could probably fix it myself with some kind of work around but sometime you just want it to work!!

My main point was you got a great game but poor presentation, like being served your favorites meal on a trash can lid.

I see what your sayign and everyone has there own opinion, but for me I love the game and im glad they released it as is.

Yes there are isssues (the late game slowdown is ridicolous later on, thats my only HUGE issue).

It will be nice when they release a bunch more patches and work on the AI,etc.. but I have already had mroe fun with this game then any other game this year and ive bought alot of games this year.

Im have a great time and I am glad its being improved regularly also.

I also dont have a problem with it being on the shelf. Ive seen tons of games released in much worse contitions on launch. The game works and is fun as hell for me. Some bugs and broken parts yes, like alot of games. But I have only had two crashes in about 35 hours, that is playable for me. I know others are having tons of crashes and that sucks, hope it gets better for everyone soon. But to me the game is very playable and very enjoyable to me personally. I know everyoen wont share my opinion or experience, but Ive loved the time ive spent with this game so far.

I tell you one thing, I will never buy another Stardock game at launch again.  From now on, IF I ever buy one again, it will be a few months after launch.  I refuse to go through this BS again.

I've been in this from very early on.  I seem to recall a question from brad long before the beta started about weather the community thought they should release early or late as a general philosophy.  The overwelming majority replied that Stardock should wait as long as possible with a huge beta effort to ensure the game was perfect at release to make it a true classic.  Didn't happen.

Then there were also many comments that the game wasn't ready, but this was ignored by Stardock.  I don't understand why.  Brad said several times that the company didn't need the cash per se, that the non-game revenues kept that pressure off the game division.  Every feeling I get from Brad is that this game is his baby and he really wanted it to succeed right off and be a classic.  I just don't understand what motivation there was to rush it out like the big game companies do.

I've become a fan of Stardock and Brad because of their stance toward customer service and quality products.  I'm an advocate among my friends talking up the company and their games.  I've bought games that weren't really my style (Sins) just because its Stardock.  I loved MoM and was emotionally investing in Elemental, preorded the LE and was in the beta from day 1.  I wanted to see the game succeed, but frankly I'm a little embarrased to be a part of this beta, since the game was released with so many problems.  I feel like people will blame me for not doing a good enough job testing it (I didn't contribute as much as I wanted to to bug hunting), but the reality was the testers knew the game wasn't ready and said so.

I'm sure the game will eventually come out better, because I know that Stardock will follow through, but I'm just so disappointed that there was a real opportunity missed to really make a positive lasting impression to the rest of the gaming community (instead of the other way around).  I hope Brad takes this as constructive criticism, and learns this lesson for the next time.  I want to see Stardock succeed and be the most admired game company, but they will need to listen to their fans and stick to their philosphy better next time.

Patience is key.  Even now, this game is worth waiting for and definitely worth playing right now.  300+ turns on a large map with one crash to date.  There is nothing better then summoning yourself an army and being able to actually use it with success!

It's a shame that we rush everything in our lives & life itself is so short.

i don't see why they should wait till February to launch the game when a few weeks of patching will do.

I think someone just made the calcuation that they wanted to get the jump on Civ5 and it turned out to be a bad decision.  More potential buyers were turned off by the avalanche of bad reviews than possibly would have been deterred from buying because they were enjoying Civ 5 so much.  The company can and should recover by getting this product to a level of quality and polish that a gamer willing to part with 50 dollars during a recession will be happy to own.

But if that does happen eventually, it still doesn't erase the tarnish of so many reviews stating that the game contains serious and glaring defects many unlrelated to hardware compatibility.

It's really too bad that all these "gamers" are so fickle as to let a few issues get in their way of seeing the potential of this title.  I understand the game industry is all about the numbers, but for me, its about the quality.  This game has it already and I am excited for the coming months and the coming patches.  I guess coming from a bunch of MMO's (mainly WoW) has taught me patience when it comes to glaring issues messing with the game experience.  Games nowadays just don't come with the same polish that they used to.  I can accept that.  Wish all the rest would.

If somebody bought a product that says "multiplayer" on the box, and takes it home to find that there's no multiplayer for two weeks (and counting), you don't think they have a legitimate complaint?

The MP side of the game isn't debatably buggy or featuring questionable mechanics. It flat out doesn't function.

Solymer89, it's nice that you're so very understanding, and I myself rather like the company StarDock, too (excellent and fast support, very nice games, no DRM).

But... if you pay money for a piece of software, you simply assume that the coders either know of no more errors in the software, or know a few very hidden bugs they're working on and will fix in a patch.

Once you put a game out into the public, yes, obviously some people are going to find some new bugs. And you'll have to fix that ASAP.

But this doesn't mean that a company can release a game which they know to be full of bugs.

I can see the potential of this game. And I already rather like it and wasted spent very many hours on it already. Still, I am unhappy seeing that there is so very much left to do.

Oh, well. Should have come out a month or maybe even two later. My bet is that they're getting large enough to have brainless managers, as every company (yes, every one) from a certain size on seems to attract. These people have an impressive lack of contact with reality, and in this case I simply assume that some chap up top said "This game must come out NOW! Before everybody gets busy with the new Civ game!".

My bet is that the developers don't consider this game to be finished, either.  X(

So, what'll we do? We will continue to beta-test. We know that the programmers will listen to us, we know that these bugs will be fixed even if it takes some time. Any bug we find, we display here, including the debugging files. Any suggestions we have, we'll put in here. After all, we know they do read every thread (which is something most companies certainly don't).

Ciao,

Klaus
