Tactical Battles

I have only just started playing this game, but I confess to wondering where the tactics come in in the tactical battles?

I assume things become more interesting later (I am only working my way through the campaign)  - because right now there doesn't seem to be much in the way of terrain features that make a difference, no possibility of deploying defensive structures, use of terrain for clever offense etc.

Which makes me wonder, what are the kind of tactics people are employing in these tactical battles? Is it a question of positioning units in the traditional tanks/dps style set-up? In which case, is there any opportunity to determine where your units will be when the tactical battle begins?

Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks!

Unfortunately, right now tactical battles seem to be a work in progress.  There's not a lot of depth to them at all.  Since this seems to be one of the top three complaints, I am hopeful SD will address it ASAP.

For me, I just mouse over the terrain to find any of those hidden/random terrain bonuses >:( , position my units there and let the enemy come to me.

Yeah...it's much too simple.  :waaaa:

I like being able to pick my targets intelligently, decide if I want to spend mana, pseudo-kite, decide if my champs should flee instead of just suiciding, and most importantly be able to actually protect my escort. Sending units with a pioneer is pointless if autoresolve always kills it first even if your other units are victorious. Simple tactics can still be much better than none at all. It doesn't have to be complex to a 'tactic'. Flanking (no, there isn't flanking ingame) is a very simplistic tactic, but it is quite effective.

Tactical battles are really fun... except they are really slow.  If they moved at some sort of reasonable speed, and the UI didn't effectively lock up while your guys were slowly pulling back their arms to swing or shoot an arrow, I'd have a lot of fun with them.

As unit diversity, spell diversity, and bugs improve, I bet the tactical battles will become great.

I really look forward to the day I have lots of dudes and they are regularly thrown about by each other's attacks.
